Chapter 1

The private dining room was bathed in brilliant, uncompromising sunlight that poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, reflecting off crystal chandeliers and casting a pristine, vivid glow across the Castellano estate. The colors of the room were impossibly bright, from the immaculate white table linens to the vibrant, towering birthday arrangements. Around the expansive mahogany table sat the elite members of the Castellano syndicate. They were all fair-skinned, their rosy cheeks flushed with expensive wine and the crisp, confident ease of American aristocracy. The air hummed with the smooth cadence of sharp American accents as the family engaged in polite, calculated conversation.
At the absolute head of the table sat Rafael Castellano. At forty-two, he radiated a deeply masculine, terrifyingly imposing presence that commanded absolute silence whenever he shifted his weight. Dressed in a tailored, dark three-piece suit and a crisp dress shirt, he watched the room with predatory stillness. His heavy gold signet ring rested against the polished wood beside his daughter’s plate. Five-year-old Amelia sat to his right, her fair face glowing with innocence in her elegant party dress. Yet, a bulky medical brace strapped to her left leg stood in stark contrast to the room's flawless aesthetic.
"It truly is a beautiful party, Rafael," Valeria Castellano said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. At thirty-eight, Rafael’s older sister wore a luxurious, emerald formal dress, her pale hands heavy with diamond rings. "But one has to wonder if all this extravagance is entirely necessary for a child who can barely walk the grounds."
"The extravagance is exactly what she deserves, Valeria," Rafael replied, his voice a low, rumbling baritone that instantly dropped the temperature in the room. "I suggest you focus on your own wine rather than my daughter’s mobility."
"I am merely speaking from a place of practical concern," Valeria shot back, her heels clicking sharply under the table. "Our family operates on strength. On projection. Every time the other families look at her, they do not see a Castellano. They see a vulnerability. A liability sitting right at the king's right hand."
"A vulnerability?" Rafael’s dark eyes locked onto his sister, his polished leather shoes shifting slightly against the marble floor. "The only liability I see at this table is the one who cannot keep her mouth shut during a five-year-old's birthday."
Valeria’s rosy cheeks flushed an angry, mottled red. She stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "You are blind, Rafael! Blinded by your own pathetic sentimentality!"

Before anyone could react, Valeria marched around the corner of the table. She lunged toward the terrified five-year-old. With a sudden, violent yank, Valeria tore the medical brace completely off Amelia’s leg. The child let out a sharp cry as her weakened leg immediately gave way. Amelia crashed heavily onto the marble floor beside the birthday table, her small hands clutching her knee in agony.
Valeria stood over the weeping child, a vicious, triumphant smirk twisting her beautiful face. She looked down at her niece, then raised her chin to address the frozen room. "Weak blood never inherits a throne."
