Chapter 2

The room plunged into a suffocating, terrified silence. The bright, vivid colors of the birthday decorations suddenly felt grotesque against the backdrop of a crying child on the floor. Amelia’s quiet, desperate sobs echoed off the pristine walls, her tiny hands desperately gripping her injured knee. The adults, frozen in their formal dinner clothing, did not dare breathe. All eyes shifted instantly toward the head of the table.

Rafael had remained seated the entire time. The intimidating stillness of the Mafia boss was unbroken, but the air around him crackled with a lethal, invisible electricity.

"Look at her, Rafael," Valeria taunted, her American accent sharp and unyielding. "She cannot even stand on her own two feet. How do you expect her to stand for this family when the time comes?"

Rafael slowly rose from his heavy leather chair. He did not acknowledge his sister. He knelt down beside his weeping daughter, his dark, tailored suit brushing the cold marble. With immense, heartbreaking gentleness, he lifted the discarded medical brace and securely fastened it back around Amelia’s fragile leg.

"Daddy…" Amelia cried, her breath hitching as tears streamed down her fair, rosy cheeks. She buried her face into the lapel of his expensive suit. "Grandma says Julian gets everything. She told me I'm broken."

Rafael’s hands stopped moving. The words hung in the bright air, a devastating revelation that shifted the entire foundation of the room. He slowly turned his head, his dark eyes bypassing Valeria entirely, locking onto the far end of the table.

Sitting there with impeccable, rigid posture was Beatrice Castellano. The sixty-seven-year-old matriarch of the family wore an elegant formal gown and heavy pearl jewelry. Her fair face was lined with age but carved from absolute stone. She did not flinch under her son’s murderous gaze.

"The child is telling the truth, Rafael," Beatrice said, her voice smooth and devoid of any maternal warmth. "She overhears things she shouldn't, but she is not lying."

"You have been speaking to my daughter behind my back," Rafael stated, his voice dangerously quiet. "You have been poisoning her mind on her own birthday."

"I am preparing her for the inevitable reality of our world," Beatrice countered, resting her manicured hands on the table. "I am protecting the legacy that my husband, your father, bled to build. A legacy you are currently jeopardizing because of your blind devotion to a cripple."

With slow, calculated precision, Beatrice picked up a thick, sealed succession folder from her lap. She placed it onto the polished mahogany and calmly slid it across the table toward Rafael. The heavy documents came to a stop just inches from his plate, the top page sliding out to reveal the bold, typed name of the new beneficiary: Julian Castellano.

"Julian is nine years old, healthy, and strong," Beatrice declared, her eyes flicking toward the young boy who sat stiffly in his formal clothing. "He is the future of this syndicate. The paperwork has already been drafted by the family's attorneys."
