Chapter 6

The bright, airy lighting of the garden suddenly felt terribly exposing. The vast, open lawn was no longer a beautiful venue; it was a killing field.
"What is happening?" Odile asked, her voice trembling as she struggled to keep up with Basil’s long strides across the grass.
"Are you familiar with the concept of a coordinated strike, Odile?" Basil asked, not looking back, his eyes locked on the heavy glass doors of the estate. "Hollis was the distraction. The real threat is already inside the walls."
The fifty guests, sensing the sudden panic of the security team, began to sprint toward the mansion. Women in high heels stumbled over the grass; men in tailored suits shoved past each other, the refined elegance of the charity reception completely disintegrating into primal terror.
Basil and Odile reached the terrace just as the first suppressed gunshot echoed from the edge of the property.
A security guard stationed near the pavilion collapsed, clutching his shoulder. Screams erupted from the crowd as people dove for cover behind the padded benches and the overturned tables.
"Get inside!" Marcus roared, ushering the frantic guests through the double doors.
Basil didn't hesitate. He pulled Odile forcefully through the entryway, the heavy glass doors sliding shut behind them just as a bullet shattered a nearby pane, raining glass across the marble floor.
The interior of the mansion was chaotic. Guests were screaming, ducking behind the heavy walnut furniture and the marble pillars of the foyer. The syndicate bodyguards were drawing their weapons, shouting orders, and forming a defensive perimeter around the exits.
"Take them to the secure dining hall!" Basil ordered his men, his deep voice cutting through the panic with absolute authority. "Lock the reinforced doors!"
He didn't follow the crowd. Instead, Basil pulled Odile toward the grand staircase.
"Where are we going?" Odile gasped, her black maid dress swishing around her ankles as she took the stairs two at a time.
"Are you safer in a crowded room full of panicked people, or with me?" Basil asked, pulling her up the final steps and into the dimly lit, heavily secured private residential wing.
"With you," Odile answered without hesitation.
Basil led her quickly down the corridor, stopping in front of the massive oak doors of his private study. He punched a code into the keypad, and the heavy locks clicked open. He pushed her gently inside and followed, locking the door firmly behind them.
The study was a sanctuary of deep leather, rich mahogany, and walls lined with rare books. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn, blocking out the afternoon sun and plunging the room into shadows.
Basil strode quickly to a reinforced steel safe embedded in the wall paneling and punched in a rapid code. He pulled a heavy, customized automatic weapon from the safe, racking the slide with a sharp, metallic clack.
He turned and looked at Odile. She was backed against the wall, her expressive eyes wide with fear, yet entirely resolute. She was not crying.
"Are you prepared to lock this door behind me?" Basil asked, walking toward her.
May you like
"Are you leaving me here?" Odile cried out, panic finally lacing her American accent. "They are attacking the house, Basil!"
She used his first name in her desperation, the formality dropping away in the face of imminent death.
