Chapter 2

The bright, cinematic lighting of the garden seemed to freeze the horrifying tableau in time. The amber liquid continued to drip from the soaked blindfold, staining the crisp white collar of Basil's expensive tailored suit. The two bodyguards held him rigidly in place, their knuckles white against his dark jacket.

Basil did not struggle against the crushing grip. The muscles in his sharp jawline bunched, his breathing remaining frighteningly steady despite the burning alcohol seeping into his eyes. The silence stretching across the fifty guests was heavy with the realization of the absolute disrespect being shown to the head of the syndicate.

Odile did not care about the syndicate rules. She didn't care about the bodyguards or the glaring presence of Hollis Ainsworth. The housemaid moved with desperate speed, abandoning her position by the serving carts.

She rushed forward, her flat shoes making no sound against the pavilion floor. She stepped directly beside Basil’s chair, her black maid dress swishing softly.

Her expressive eyes widened at the sight of the soaked fabric clinging to his face. Her face, usually so calm and polished, was tight with genuine, unfiltered worry. She reached out, her delicate fingers trembling violently. With immense, protective gentleness, she immediately untied and removed the soaked blindfold from his head.

"Sir..." Odile whispered, her American accent cracking with pure, unfiltered anxiety.

She grabbed a clean linen towel from the tasting table. Leaning in close, she gently pressed the soft fabric against his closed eyelids, carefully absorbing the burning alcohol before it could do permanent damage to his vision.

"Let me dry your eyes," Odile said softly, her lips trembling as she maintained the gentle pressure.

Basil did not open his eyes immediately. The cold, dangerous edge he projected to the world softened for a fraction of a second. He turned his head slightly toward her voice, trusting the touch of the housemaid who had just thrown herself into the line of fire.

"I am unharmed, Odile," Basil murmured, his deep voice carrying a quiet, terrifying calm that contrasted sharply with the violence of the moment.

Hollis watched the tender display with an expression of sheer, unadulterated disgust. He adjusted his expensive formal suit, refusing to let the moment of humiliation fade. He took a deliberate step forward, leaning closer to his blinded cousin, invading his personal space.

"Your father fought harder than this," Hollis mocked, his voice dripping with condescending venom, hoping to provoke an erratic response from the younger boss.

The mention of the former patriarch, who had died under mysterious circumstances a year prior, was the catalyst.

Basil finally opened his eyes. They were slightly red from the alcohol, but they were entirely cold, devoid of any panic or fear. He fixed his sharp, calculating stare directly on Hollis.

Hollis’s smirk faltered for a microsecond under the weight of that gaze. Seeking to re-establish dominance, he raised his fist, preparing to strike the seated boss directly in the face.

Odile saw the hand rising. The protective fury that ignited in her chest obliterated her fear of the man in the expensive suit. As Hollis pulled his arm back, Odile’s gaze darted to the side. Sitting inches away, resting on the tasting table, was the heavy glass pitcher filled entirely with iced water.

The housemaid didn't think. She reached out and grabbed the handle.
