Chapter 3

The cinematic light of the afternoon sun caught the sudden, sharp movement of the housemaid. The fifty guests surrounding the tables gasped collectively, their champagne glasses momentarily forgotten as the impossible unfolded before them.

Odile didn't hesitate. She gripped the heavy glass handle tightly, her knuckles turning white. Using the momentum of her turning body, she swung her arm forward in one continuous, forceful motion.

Before Hollis's punch could fall, Odile threw the entire pitcherful of freezing iced water directly into his face.

The heavy wave of ice and water connected with a loud, wet splash.

Hollis yelled in shock, the freezing liquid hitting him with the force of a physical blow. He recoiled violently, his raised hand dropping uselessly to his side as he stumbled backward, sputtering and gasping for breath. The ice cubes clattered across the pavilion floor, and the water completely ruined his expensive formal suit.

He crashed heavily into a large wicker loveseat resting against the pavilion wall, his momentum sending the piece of furniture skidding backward.

The sudden, chaotic violence from the gentle housemaid completely derailed the two massive bodyguards. Both the Black American and the white American guard turned their heads sharply, their attention instantly snapping toward their sputtering, soaked employer.

In their surprise, they instinctively loosened their crushing grip on Basil’s shoulders, stepping slightly forward to assist the older man.

It was a fatal miscalculation.

With a powerful, explosive surge of masculine strength, Basil stood up. He pulled his arms free from their weakened hold, ripping his sleeves from their grasp. His broad shoulders snapped back into a fighting stance, towering over the tasting table.

The sudden movement caused the two guards to freeze, realizing their mistake. They turned back toward the boss, but it was too late. The tactical advantage was gone. The element of surprise had vanished, replaced by the lethal, cold reality of an unrestrained Mafia boss.

The watching guests, some of whom had been holding back snickers at Basil's initial humiliation, stopped laughing instantly. The polite, affluent conversation that had characterized the garden party evaporated into a suffocating, terrified silence. No one spoke a word. The air grew heavy, thick with the promise of impending violence.

Odile immediately set the empty glass pitcher down on the table. She did not look at the gasping, cursing man thrashing against the wicker loveseat, desperately trying to wipe the ice water from his eyes.

She turned immediately back to Basil.

She stepped closer to him, her delicate hands moving with practiced, gentle efficiency. She grabbed a fresh, dry linen towel from the table and carefully draped it around his wet, stained collar.

Her fingers trembled violently as she carefully blotted the remaining drops of whisky from beneath his sharp jawline. She looked up at him, her expressive eyes searching his handsome face with deep, anxious intensity, checking for any signs of worsening pain.

Basil did not look at the guards. He looked down at the housemaid supporting him. His cold, dangerous eyes softened, recognizing the profound, insane bravery she had just exhibited.

"Are you unharmed, Odile?" Basil asked softly, his deep voice meant only for her ears.

May you like

"I'm fine, sir," Odile breathed, looking up into his face.

Basil turned his head slowly, his gaze shifting away from her and locking directly onto the man struggling to stand up from the wicker loveseat.
