Chapter 1

The private garden pavilion of the Ainsworth estate was bathed in bright, cinematic light. There was no yellow tint to the afternoon sun, only a natural, luminous clarity that made the vibrant greens of the manicured lawns and the crisp whites of the floral arrangements pop with vivid intensity. Fifty donors, syndicate capos, guests, and staff members milled about the crowded garden charity reception, their fair, rosy skin glowing under the clear sky. The air hummed with crisp American accents, the clinking of crystal glasses, and the dangerous undercurrent of a power transition that was far from settled.

At thirty-two, Basil Ainsworth was the undisputed boss of the family, a man whose reputation for calculated violence was masked by striking, masculine handsomeness. His dark hair was slicked back, his sharp jawline defined by neat stubble. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit, his artistic neck and hand tattoos partially hidden by expensive silk. A heavy family signet ring rested on his finger, catching the light alongside a polished wristwatch and immaculate leather shoes.

"The waterfront expansion is proceeding perfectly, Basil," a senator remarked, leaning against the edge of the pavilion.

Basil’s deep, measured voice was a low rumble. "We find that precision ensures success, Senator. Do you disagree?"

"Not at all," the politician replied, offering a nervous, placating smile.

Today’s charity event included a blind whisky-tasting challenge, a highly publicized spectacle designed to project an image of cultured wealth to the local politicians. Basil was seated at the tasting table, wearing a thick, black fabric blindfold. A pitcher of iced water, clean linen towels, and several empty glasses stood nearby.

Suddenly, the heavy scent of expensive cologne announced the arrival of Hollis Ainsworth. At forty-three, Basil’s older cousin and senior family associate wore an expensive formal suit adorned with a heavy family pin. He moved with the arrogance of untested power, flanked by two massive bodyguards in dark suits and earpieces—one Black American, one white American.

Hollis stopped directly in front of the tasting table. He didn't speak. He simply gestured to his men.

The two bodyguards moved with terrifying speed. The Black American guard seized Basil’s right shoulder while the white American guard locked down his left. The sheer force of their grip clamped the Mafia boss violently into the heavy wooden chair.

Before Basil could react, Hollis grabbed a full glass of amber whisky from the table. With a sudden, vicious flick of his wrist, Hollis poured the burning alcohol directly over Basil’s blindfold and face.

The alcohol stung instantly, soaking the fabric and running down Basil's cheeks and jawline. The guests who had been chuckling at the blind tasting stopped laughing immediately. A suffocating silence fell over the pavilion. Basil’s powerful hands gripped the wooden arms of his chair, the wood groaning under the pressure. He did not yell. He did not thrash.

"Your father knew when to swallow his pride," Hollis smirked loudly, ensuring every guest heard the public humiliation.

Odile Harcourt, a twenty-five-year-old housemaid, stood near the edge of the pavilion, her beautiful, expressive eyes wide with horror. She wore a traditional fitted black maid dress, a pristine white apron, a white lace maid headband, and flat shoes. Her delicate features were pale, her slender build rigid with fear. But as she watched the burning alcohol drip from the boss's jawline, her fear evaporated into a blinding, protective fury.
