Chapter 1

The dining room was bathed in bright, natural light that poured through the massive bay windows, casting a cinematic brilliance over the evening gathering. There were no heavy yellow tints to dull the immaculate setting; everything was crisp, vivid, and painfully pristine. Dozens of guests, all white Americans with fair, rosy complexions, sat around the sprawling mahogany table. The clinking of fine crystal and the low, melodic hum of sharp American accents filled the warm air. At the head of the table sat Heloise, thirty-six years old and radiating an icy, untouchable elegance in her tailored silk gown.
"The renovations on the south wing are nearly complete," Heloise said smoothly, offering a radiant smile to the gentleman seated to her right. "I assure you, Arthur, once the new gallery is finished, it will be the envy of the entire estate."
"It sounds magnificent, Heloise," Arthur replied, taking a slow sip of his Cabernet. "Though I must admit, managing a property of this size while your husband is away on such a long business trip must be quite the burden."
"Oh, it requires a firm hand, certainly," Heloise laughed, a bright, musical sound that didn't quite reach her cold blue eyes. "But discipline is the foundation of any great household. Isn't that right, Clara?"
Heloise turned her attention to her eight-year-old niece, the favored cousin of the family. Clara sat comfortably in a plush chair, her fair, rosy cheeks flushed with delight as she smoothed the expensive tulle of her vibrant pink party dress.
"Yes, Aunt Heloise!" Clara chirped, popping a chocolate-covered strawberry into her mouth. "You always say that good girls get the best rewards."
"Exactly," Heloise purred, reaching out to gently pat Clara’s perfectly curled hair. "And those who fail to meet expectations learn their place."
From the shadows of the arched kitchen doorway, a tiny figure emerged, struggling beneath the weight of a heavy silver serving tray. Five-year-old Thora’s small arms trembled violently. She was a devastatingly pretty, adorable child, but her fair skin was pale with exhaustion. Instead of a party dress, Thora was draped in a stark, black-and-white maid’s outfit, the starchy fabric rough against her delicate skin.
"Hurry up with those hors d'oeuvres, girl," a male guest snapped from the end of the table, not even bothering to look at her face. "We’ve been waiting ten minutes."
"I'm sorry, sir. I'm going as fast as I can," Thora whispered, her tiny voice shaking as she strained to lift the tray higher.

"Don't speak unless spoken to," Heloise commanded sharply, her smile vanishing instantly. "Serve the guests. And try not to drop anything on the Persian rug. You couldn't afford to replace it if you worked for a hundred years."
Thora bit her trembling lower lip, her small feet shuffling across the polished floorboards. Her arms ached, and her vision swam from sheer fatigue as she navigated the maze of towering adults, offering the silver tray to people who looked right through her.
