Chapter 5

Noah looked up at his father, his eyes wide and brimming with unshed tears. He clutched the plush rabbit so tightly his small knuckles turned white. The boy hesitated, glancing terrified around Elliot’s solid frame to catch a glimpse of Viviana, but his father’s broad shoulders completely blocked her from view.
"Will you show me what your mother left for you, Noah?" Elliot asked, his deep voice softening into a rare, gentle cadence, entirely devoid of its usual lethal edge.
Noah sniffled, rubbing his nose with the back of his small hand. He nodded slowly. His trembling fingers searched the worn fur of the plush rabbit’s chest until they found the hard, plastic outline of the small recordable voice box hidden beneath the stitching.
The six-year-old pressed the button and looked directly at Elliot. Tears finally gathered along Noah’s lower eyelids, spilling silently over his rosy cheeks.
The dining hall was dead silent.
A burst of quiet, localized static hissed from the toy. Then, a woman's voice emerged. It was fragile, exhausted, and laced with absolute, controlled terror. It was unmistakably Mara Hale’s voice.
"Viviana. Put the gun down."
The recording lasted barely three seconds, but the impact was seismic. It was not a loving goodbye message. It was the desperate, final negotiation of a woman facing her own executioner.
Elliot froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching violently in his chest. His cold eyes remained on Noah for a brief, motionless beat as the reality of the recording cemented itself in his mind. The tragic, accidental death he had mourned for ninety days had just been rewritten into a cold-blooded assassination.
Slowly, terrifyingly, Elliot shifted his gaze. The movement was predatory, his eyes moving first toward Viviana, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw firmed almost imperceptibly, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.
He held Viviana’s eyes in a cold, unwavering silence that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath.

Every single guest in the room remained hyper-attentive, paralyzed by the overwhelming, lethal energy radiating from Elliot. The luminous, airy room offered no sanctuary to the woman caught in the crosshairs of his perceptive eyes.
"Did you truly believe the dead would remain silent forever?" Elliot finally asked, the question hanging in the air like a guillotine blade ready to drop.
