Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm golden light across the ivory wall panels of the dining room, illuminating a space designed to project absolute power. Gilded mirrors reflected the steady, crackling glow of a carved marble fireplace, while tall candles flickered in heavy silver candelabras. Beneath the canopy of light, pristine white roses were meticulously arranged among crystal glasses and fine porcelain. The polished walnut tables were surrounded by champagne velvet chairs, each occupied by the city’s most dangerous and influential elite. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the low, melodic hum of polite American accents, masking the lethal reality of the men and women breaking bread together.

At the head of the room sat Elliot Crowne. The mafia boss possessed the movie-star handsome features of a classic leading man, with powerful shoulders that effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face featured a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jawline, shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly across his forehead. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers with generous spacing, catching the candlelight as he adjusted his heavy family signet ring. A small, intricate neck tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

"Are you finding the vintage to your exact preferences, Senator?" Elliot asked, his deep, low voice vibrating with a controlled pause.

The wealthy politician, his rosy cheeks flushed from the wine, nodded eagerly. "It is magnificent, Elliot. A beautiful evening to celebrate the merging of two great families."

Opposite Elliot sat his fiancée, Viviana Shaw. She was draped in a sculpted champagne silk gown that clung flawlessly to her figure. Diamond earrings sparked against her fair skin, matching the massive engagement ring that rested heavily on her finger. She offered a carefully reassuring public smile to the guests, playing the role of the devoted future wife to perfection.

"We are just so thrilled to have our closest friends here," Viviana said smoothly. "It feels like a true new beginning for us all."

Moving gracefully near the edge of the dining hall was Cora Bennett. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, with a softly oval face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones. Her hair was arranged in an elegant, loose braided bun. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress featuring a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, white collar, and matching cuffs completed her immaculate uniform.

Cora approached a low walnut console resting against the ivory-paneled wall, her hands trembling slightly as she adjusted a fresh vase of roses. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs. In the deep pocket of her apron rested a worn plush rabbit. It belonged to Noah, Elliot's seven-year-old son. Cora had discovered something inside the toy earlier that afternoon—a secret that was about to tear the Crowne empire apart.
