Chapter 3

The moment the plush rabbit touched the pristine white damask tablecloth, the dynamic at the head table shifted entirely. The worn, slightly tattered toy looked completely absurd sitting among the crystal glasses, white roses, and fine porcelain, a stark anomaly in the luxurious interior.

Noah’s eyes widened. A flicker of profound relief washed over his pale face.

Before the boy could reach for it, Viviana’s hand shot across the table. Her sculpted champagne silk gown rustled aggressively as she moved. The carefully reassuring public smile vanished for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flash of genuine, venomous irritation.

"Noah, darling, we do not bring filthy toys to the dinner table," Viviana hissed, keeping her voice low enough that the surrounding guests could not hear the raw malice dripping from her American accent.

She reached her manicured fingers toward the rabbit, her heavy diamond engagement ring catching the warm golden light.

Noah reacted with explosive, terrified speed. He lunged forward, his small hands grabbing the rabbit just before Viviana could snatch it. The boy immediately pulled the toy tightly against his chest, burying his face into its worn fur. Instead of retreating into his velvet chair, Noah threw his body sideways, pressing himself desperately against Cora’s black maid dress. He clung to her white apron, seeking an absolute, physical barrier between himself and his future stepmother.

Elliot, whose cold, perceptive eyes missed absolutely nothing in his domain, noticed the violent, panicked reaction of his son. He watched the way the blood drained from the boy's face, and the sheer, unadulterated terror that radiated from his small frame.

The mafia boss did not move frantically. He turned his head slowly. He looked past his trembling son and locked his gaze directly into Cora’s expressive eyes.

"Cora. Why is Noah frightened?"

Elliot’s voice was deep, quiet, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke with a measured, chilling pause after her name. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone sliced through the ambient chatter of the room like a straight razor.

The effect was instantaneous and absolute. Every single guest at the long tables stopped eating and speaking. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered slowly. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the housemaid and his son.

Viviana, sensing the catastrophic shift in the room's atmosphere, immediately retracted her hand. She met Elliot’s cold gaze, forcing her lips into a faint, concerned smile that did not reach her eyes.

"Tessa's been frightening him, darling," Viviana stated, her tone flawlessly smooth and softly regretful, though she purposely used the wrong name for the housemaid to establish dominance.

Her eyes frantically searched Elliot’s angular expression for a sign of agreement, silently urging him to play along and not cause a scene in front of their powerful guests.
