Chapter 4

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Crowne empire began to fracture.

Elliot’s expression remained an unreadable mask of masculine stone. He did not return Viviana's smile. He did not accept her smooth, practiced reassurance. Instead, he moved with lethal fluidity.

"Do you expect me to believe a housemaid is the source of my son's terror?" Elliot asked.

He rose slowly from his champagne velvet chair, placing his towering, broad-shouldered frame deliberately between Viviana and both Noah and Cora. His dark tailored suit acted as a massive, physical shield, cutting off the socialite's line of sight to the trembling boy. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he rested his knuckles on the edge of the polished walnut table.

Cora did not shrink away from the mafia boss. She held her ground, her elegant posture unwavering despite the terror hammering in her chest. She kept one hand resting gently on Noah's shoulder, pulling the little boy slightly closer to the safety of her cinched waist.

Cora met Elliot’s cold, observant eyes. Her softly oval face was pale, but her expressive brows conveyed a deep, agonizing resolve. Her lips trembled slightly, fighting the overwhelming pressure of the silent room, but when she spoke, her voice remained devastatingly clear.

"Noah’s mother recorded this," Cora said.

The words hit the room with the force of a detonating bomb. A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests. Helena Crowne had died three months ago in a sudden, tragic accident that had devastated the syndicate. To speak her name at the engagement dinner of her successor was a violation of every unspoken rule of the underworld.

"Is this a cruel attempt at a joke, Cora?" Elliot asked, his voice dropping into a register that promised absolute devastation, though his perceptive eyes never left hers, searching for the truth.

"It is not a joke, sir," Cora answered, her American accent steadying as the truth finally spilled out. "I found it today. Hidden inside the lining of his toy."

Viviana gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as her hand began to shake violently. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the housemaid a liar, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming tension radiating from the man standing opposite her.

"Are you prepared to show me what you found?" Elliot asked, looking down at his son.
