Chapter 7

The days following the explosive engagement dinner were tense, charged with the undeniable reality of an impending syndicate war. The Vale estate had been transformed into an impenetrable fortress. Armed bodyguards patrolled the perimeter around the clock, their dark suits contrasting sharply with the bright, vivid greens of the expansive gardens.

Inside the mansion, however, the atmosphere had dramatically shifted. The oppressive fear that Daphne Sterling had injected into the household evaporated, replaced by a strange, quiet tranquility.

Tessa Blake found her role within the estate fundamentally altered. Though she still wore her sophisticated black maid dress, complete with the cinched waist and white apron, she was no longer tasked with heavy labor. By Sebastian’s direct order, her primary duty was now the personal care and management of the master suite and his private study.

It was late afternoon, the cinematic, natural sunlight pouring through the study windows. Tessa was quietly dusting the mahogany bookshelves, her hair arranged in its usual low twisted bun, with loose, face-framing strands catching the light.

The heavy oak doors opened, and Sebastian walked in. He looked exhausted but undeniably masculine, his tailored dark suit jacket slung casually over his shoulder. The extremely short, neatly trimmed beard on his jawline seemed slightly darker, evidence of long nights spent strategizing with his capos.

"You should be resting your wrist, Tessa," Sebastian noted, his deep, measured voice breaking the silence.

Tessa turned, offering him a soft, breathtaking smile that transformed her face entirely. "It’s nearly healed, Sebastian. And I prefer to keep busy. The quiet makes me anxious."

Sebastian walked over to his massive desk, tossing his jacket onto a chair. He poured himself a small glass of bourbon, offering a silent, questioning glance toward Tessa. She politely shook her head.

"The Sterling family is attempting to rally support from the northern factions," Sebastian stated casually, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. He leaned against the edge of his desk, crossing his long legs at the ankles. "They claim I broke the alliance unprovoked. They are demanding reparations."

"Are you going to pay them?" Tessa asked, her expressive eyes wide with concern. She knew the danger her existence had brought to his empire.

"I am going to send them... a message," Sebastian replied, his cold eyes glinting with a dangerous promise. "But that is not... why I am here."

He set his glass down and walked slowly toward her. The distance between them vanished, the sheer physical presence of the Mafia boss overwhelmingly potent. He stopped just inches away, his towering frame forcing her to tilt her head up to maintain eye contact.

"I need you to tell me the truth, Tessa," Sebastian murmured, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register. "Daphne threatened your brother. What exactly did she say?"

Tessa’s breath hitched. The memory was a dark, ugly scar she had tried to bury. "She knew about his debts. He owes money to some bookmakers in the lower east side. She told me that if I went to you about the abuse, she would have the bookmakers collect his debt in blood. She said she had the power to make it happen."

Sebastian’s jaw clenched. The moderately placed tattoos on his neck shifted as he slowly shook his head in absolute disgust.

"She weaponized your love for your family," Sebastian said, raising his hand. He gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind Tessa’s ear. The touch was electric, a sudden, burning contrast to the coldness he showed the rest of the world. "Give me the names of the bookmakers. By midnight tonight, your brother's debt will be entirely erased."

"You don't have to do that for me," Tessa whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

"I protect what is mine," Sebastian replied, his thumb lightly grazing her fair, rosy cheek. "And you, Tessa... belong in this house."
