Chapter 1

The grand dining hall of the Vale estate was a masterpiece of luminous architecture, bathed in bright, elegant video-like colors that felt almost surreal in their perfection. Luxurious indoor dinner lighting cascaded from massive crystal chandeliers, casting a soft, gentle glow that mingled effortlessly with the flickering candlelight on every table. The room was steeped in a slightly warm, golden ambiance that caught the polished highlights of the silverware and the clean whites of the imported linen tablecloths. It was an atmosphere that was rich, upscale, and undeniably refined. There was no harsh yellow cast to the light, nor any muddy orange tint; it was purely pristine, perfectly illuminating the natural, fair, rosy skin tones of the elite guests gathered within.

At the head table sat Sebastian Vale, a thirty-six-year-old Mafia boss who commanded the room without having to lift a finger. He was as handsome as a movie star, possessing a deeply masculine and athletic build, his broad shoulders filling out a tailored dark three-piece suit with effortless grace. His thick, loosely waved dark hair was swept back, save for one distinct strand that rested near his forehead, softening his lethal reputation with a charming, almost romantic look. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jaw were framed by an extremely short, neatly trimmed beard.

"The shipments from the western ports cleared customs an hour ago, Sebastian," a capo murmured, leaning in close to the boss's ear. His American accent was crisp and professional.

Sebastian took a slow sip from his crystal water glass. "Ensure the harbor master... receives his usual compensation," Sebastian replied. His deep, quiet voice carried controlled pauses, keeping his volume incredibly low, yet every sentence sounded measured, cold, and dangerous. "We do... not tolerate... delays."

"Understood, Boss," the capo replied, quickly stepping away into the shadows.

Beside Sebastian sat Daphne Sterling, his thirty-year-old fiancée. She was a vision of high-society perfection, draped in a flawless silk evening gown. Diamond drop earrings framed her fair, rosy face, and a massive engagement ring glittered on her left hand. Her smartphone rested face-down on the pristine white tablecloth beside her fine china plate.

"It truly is a perfect evening, darling," Daphne remarked, offering him a composed, radiant smile. "The families are getting along beautifully. Our union is going to bring so much peace to this city."

"Peace... is a fragile construct, Daphne," Sebastian murmured, his cold, penetrating eyes scanning the crowded tables. "It requires... constant vigilance."

Through the crowded, laughing guests, Tessa Blake navigated the room with quiet, invisible grace. At twenty-six, the housemaid was stunningly beautiful, possessing the kind of natural, magnetic allure of a movie star. Her softly square face, expressive eyes, gently arched brows, and full, rosy lips were framed by hair arranged in a low twisted bun, with loose, face-framing strands catching the golden candlelight.

She possessed a slender figure with a defined waist, accentuated perfectly by a sophisticated black maid dress. The fitted bodice, short A-line skirt, and pristine white apron tied neatly at the waist were paired seamlessly with a white collar and cuffs. The look was elegant and polished, subtly seductive without being revealing in the slightest.

Tessa approached the head table, her fair hands trembling almost imperceptibly as she carried a small, exquisite crystal vase filled with fresh white roses to complete the centerpiece.

"Excuse me, Mr. Vale, Miss Sterling," Tessa whispered, her American accent fragile and soft.

"Just put it down, girl, and don't block the candlelight," Daphne snapped, her tone entirely devoid of the warmth she had shown Sebastian just moments before.

Tessa carefully reached forward to set the vase down between the flickering candles. As she extended her arm, the stark white cuff of her left sleeve slid back just an inch. The bright, cinematic lighting instantly caught the angry, dark purple and blue bruising wrapped entirely around her delicate right wrist.

Tessa gasped softly, her expressive eyes widening in panic. She quickly jerked her arm back to cover the injury, pulling the crisp white cuff down. But it was too late. Sebastian’s cold, penetrating eyes had already caught the unnatural discoloration marring her fair, rosy skin.

His gaze lifted slowly, locking directly onto Tessa’s face. The charming, romantic aesthetic vanished from his features, replaced by the terrifying, calculating stillness of a predator. Recognizing the deadly shift in his expression, Tessa took a small, frightened step away from him, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.
