Chapter 2

The sound of the plastic inhaler cracking against the far wall echoed like a gunshot in the cavernous dining hall. For a fraction of a second, the entire table froze, unable to process the sheer, unprovoked cruelty of what had just occurred. But Orson Bellori did not freeze.

The moment Mara slipped from her chair, the terrifying, cold exterior of the Mafia boss shattered, revealing the fierce, primal instinct of a father. Orson abandoned his conversation instantly. He shoved his heavy dining chair backward with such force that it toppled over, crashing against the pristine hardwood floor.

He moved with an explosive, terrifying speed that completely defied the elegant restraint of his tailored three-piece suit. The polished leather of his shoes gripped the floor as he rushed across the expansive room. He did not look at Tamsin. He did not look at his shocked capos. His cold, intimidating eyes were locked entirely on his daughter, whose tiny body was curling into a desperate ball on the carpet.

Orson dropped to his knees the second he reached the wall. The artistic tattoos on his hands and fingers flexed as he blindly reached beneath the heavy oak cabinet. His fingers grazed the plastic casing of the inhaler, and he ripped it out from the shadows, spinning around to drop directly beside Mara.

"I have you, sweetheart. Daddy is right here," Orson murmured. His naturally authoritative voice abandoned all its usual menace, shifting into a frantic, incredibly tender whisper.

He pulled the three-year-old gently into his arms, supporting her back against his broad chest. With practiced, urgent precision, he unspooled the inhaler, pressed the mouthpiece to Mara’s pale lips, and triggered the canister.

"Breathe with me, Mara," Orson commanded softly, his deep, raspy voice serving as a steady anchor in her terrifying storm. "Slow, deep breaths. You are safe."

The medicine rushed into her lungs. Mara’s tiny hands clutched desperately at the lapels of Orson’s dark suit, wrinkling the expensive fabric. Her chest heaved violently as she fought to draw the air back into her body. The fair, rosy color that had completely drained from her skin slowly began to return in splotchy, panicked patches.

"Daddy…" Mara cried, speaking between ragged, heartbreaking hiccups as the air finally filled her lungs. "Daddy… I can't breathe."

"You are breathing, my love," Orson whispered, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to her forehead. He held her tightly, ignoring the dozens of eyes burning into his back. "You are breathing perfectly now. Just hold on to me."

The room behind him was dead silent. The clinking of silverware had ceased entirely. The elite members of the Bellori family and their lethal bodyguards stood like statues in the bright cinematic light, watching the most dangerous man in their world kneel on the floor to comfort a crying toddler. But beneath the silence, a dark, suffocating tension was rapidly building. Tamsin had not just attacked a child; she had attacked the bloodline of the Don.
