Chapter 9

The descent into the sub-basement holding cells of the Arden estate felt like walking into a tomb. The air grew damp and cold, smelling heavily of earth and iron. The bright, luminous lights of the upper floors were replaced by harsh, flickering fluorescent bulbs.
Magnus walked with measured, deliberate steps, his tailored suit a stark contrast to the grim surroundings. Elowen walked beside him, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She had insisted on coming, needing to see the resolution of the nightmare she had helped expose.
Marcus stood outside a heavy steel door at the end of the corridor, his arms crossed.
"Is he ready?" Magnus asked quietly.
"He's been begging for a priest for two days, Boss," Marcus grunted, pulling a heavy ring of keys from his belt. "He knows what's coming."
Marcus unlocked the heavy deadbolts with a loud, metallic clank and pulled the door open.
Roderick Arden was huddled on a crude metal cot in the corner of the small, concrete cell. The expensive formal suit he had worn at the banquet was ruined, stained with dirt and sweat. He looked up, his face pale and haggard, the arrogance completely stripped away by the reality of his impending death.
"Magnus," Roderick gasped, scrambling off the cot and falling to his knees on the cold floor. "Please. I'm your uncle. We share blood. You can't do this."
Magnus stepped into the cell, his cold, observant eyes fixed on the pathetic figure before him. Elowen remained just outside the door, watching the exchange.
"Do you believe sharing blood grants you immunity from the consequences of treason?" Magnus asked, his deep voice echoing in the small room.
"I was misguided!" Roderick sobbed, holding his hands up in a desperate plea. "I thought you were weak! I thought the family needed a stronger hand! I never wanted to kill you, I just wanted you to step down!"
"Did you think public humiliation and theft were the hallmarks of a strong leader?" Magnus inquired, stepping closer, towering over the kneeling man. "Did you think I would surrender my empire because you cut my hair?"
"I was wrong!" Roderick wept, grabbing at the hem of Magnus's trousers. "Please, spare me! Banish me! I'll leave the country! You'll never see me again!"
Magnus looked down at his uncle, completely devoid of empathy. He reached into the inner pocket of his jacket and slowly withdrew his suppressed pistol. The dark metal caught the flickering fluorescent light.
"Do you truly believe a king can leave a traitor alive and still command respect?" Magnus asked softly, stepping back to avoid the grasping hands.
Roderick’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as he stared down the barrel of the gun. He looked past Magnus, his eyes landing on Elowen standing in the doorway.
"You!" Roderick shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at her. "You ruined everything! You are nothing but a servant!"
"Is she a servant, Roderick, or is she the woman who will wear the ring you tried to steal?" Magnus asked, his voice dropping to a lethal, freezing register.
He didn't wait for his uncle to process the words. Magnus raised the weapon and fired a single, precise shot. The suppressed pistol made a sharp, deadly thwip sound.
Roderick collapsed backward onto the concrete floor, instantly dead.
Magnus lowered the gun, engaging the safety with a metallic click. He stared at the body for a long moment, the final weight of his father's complicated legacy lifting from his shoulders. The coup was officially crushed. The throne was secure.
He turned away from the cell and walked back out into the corridor, slipping the weapon back into his jacket. He looked at Elowen, searching her expressive eyes for any sign of horror or regret.
"Are you harmed by the truth of what I am, Elowen?" Magnus asked gently, stepping closer to her.
"I always knew what you were, Magnus," Elowen whispered, reaching out to gently touch the side of his face where his hair was fading. "I am not afraid of the dark, not as long as I am with you."

Magnus’s cold eyes softened completely. He pulled her against his chest, a heavy anchor in the uncertain world they were about to navigate together.
"Shall we leave this darkness behind us, then?" Magnus asked, offering her his arm.
