Chapter 5

The touch of his hand against her sleeve sent a jolt of electricity straight to Elowen's core. She looked up into his cold, observant eyes and found them entirely devoid of the malice he had directed at his uncle. Instead, they burned with a quiet, profound intensity that left her breathless. The bright, cinematic lighting of the ballroom illuminated the stark contrast between them—the towering, dangerous mafia boss and the delicate, beautiful housemaid who had just defended his honor.

"I couldn't just watch them humiliate you, sir," Elowen whispered, her expressive eyes locked onto his. "You didn't deserve that."

"Do you believe anyone in this room cared about what I deserved, Elowen?" Magnus asked softly, his thumb gently tracing the fabric of her sleeve. "Did you not see them raise their phones to record my downfall?"

"I saw them," Elowen admitted, a flicker of anger tightening her delicate features. "They are cowards. All of them."

Magnus’s sharp jaw relaxed into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. "And yet, the only person with the courage to strike a made man was a woman holding a folded napkin."

He looked around the grand ballroom. The fifty guests remained frozen at their tables, terrified to speak or move, unsure of what the unpredictable boss would do next. The charity banquet, meant to be a display of philanthropic power, was completely ruined.

"Are we finished here for the evening?" Magnus asked the room at large, his voice returning to a cold, authoritative rumble.

Chairs scraped frantically against the marble floor as the guests took the dismissal as a command to flee. Capos, politicians, and socialites scrambled toward the exits, abandoning their fine porcelain plates and crystal stemware. Within minutes, the vast, luxurious room was entirely empty, save for Magnus and Elowen. The heavy doors clicked shut, leaving them alone in the profound, echoing silence.

Magnus let out a long, slow breath. He reached up with his tattooed hand, his fingers gingerly touching the side of his head where Roderick had driven the clippers. The folded linen napkin Elowen had placed there fluttered slightly.

"Is it as bad as it feels?" Magnus asked, a hint of genuine vulnerability coloring his deep voice.

Elowen stepped closer, her natural instinct to care overriding her residual fear. "May I?" she asked softly, reaching her hands up.

Magnus gave a single nod.

With gentle, trembling fingers, Elowen removed the linen napkin. The bright light revealed a harsh, jagged patch where the thick, dark hair had been shorn close to the scalp. It was a glaring imperfection on his otherwise movie-star handsome face, a jagged scar of betrayal.

"It's noticeable, sir," Elowen said honestly, her voice gentle and soothing. "But it can be fixed. A barber can even it out tomorrow."

"Will a barber be able to even out the betrayal of my own blood?" Magnus asked quietly, his eyes searching her face.

"No," Elowen answered softly, her hands resting lightly on his broad shoulders. "But you survived it. And you exposed him. That is what they will remember."

Magnus stared at her, deeply moved by her unwavering clarity and strength. The quiet mutual affection they had harbored in stolen glances and brief conversations over the past year had just been thrust violently into the open.

"Why did you do it, Elowen?" Magnus asked, stepping closer, erasing the remaining distance between them. "Why risk your life for a man like me?"

"Because you have always treated me with kindness in a house full of cruelty," Elowen answered, her breath hitching as she looked up at him. "Because I saw the man beneath the suits and the tattoos, and I couldn't let them break you."

Magnus’s eyes softened completely, filled with a deep, consuming devotion that he had never allowed himself to feel before. He reached out, his refined, tattooed hands gently framing her softly contoured face. His thumbs brushed lightly over her fair, rosy skin, wiping away a stray tear she hadn't realized had fallen.

"Do you understand what happens now?" Magnus asked, his voice a low, magnetic rumble. "Do you realize that by striking my uncle, you have crossed a line from which you cannot return?"

May you like

"I know," Elowen whispered, leaning almost imperceptibly into the warmth of his hands. "I knew it the moment I moved."

"Will you stay by my side while I rebuild what that traitor tried to break?" Magnus asked, the question hanging heavily in the luminous air.
