Chapter 2

The gentle pressure of Elowen's hand against his shoulder grounded Magnus in a way he hadn't anticipated. The cold, calculating machinery of his mind paused for a fraction of a second as he absorbed the sheer vulnerability and reckless bravery shining in her eyes. The bright, cinematic lighting of the ballroom caught the natural, rosy flush on her delicate cheekbones, contrasting sharply with the pale, terrified set of her mouth.
"You shouldn't be here, Elowen," Magnus warned quietly, his voice pitched so only she could hear over the buzzing of the clippers. "Step back. They will not hesitate to hurt you."
Elowen shook her head slightly, her grip on his shoulder tightening. "I know what I saw, Mr. Arden," she breathed, her gaze darting nervously toward Roderick. "I won't let them do this to you."
Roderick noticed the whispered exchange. His face twisted with absolute disgust. The fact that his nephew, the supposed terror of the syndicate, was finding comfort in the presence of a lowly servant infuriated him. It ruined the narrative of total dominance he was trying to project to the commission members seated around the banquet tables.
"Get this girl out of my sight," Roderick snapped, gripping Magnus’s collar tightly with his free hand. He raised the buzzing clippers toward Magnus’s head again, intending to finish the humiliating job.
Elowen turned toward the older man, visibly frightened, yet she did not retreat.
"Hold him still," Roderick commanded coldly, his eyes fixed entirely on his nephew.
The two bodyguards immediately tightened their grip, their massive hands pressing painfully into Magnus’s biceps, securing him firmly against the upholstery of the chair.
Magnus prepared himself for the next strike, his sharp jaw setting into unyielding granite. "Do you believe this display makes you look like a leader, Roderick, or merely a jealous old man playing with toys?" he asked.
The taunt worked. Roderick snarled, lunging forward with the clippers aimed directly at the center of Magnus's forehead.
Elowen did not scream. She did not plead. Driven by an instinctual, protective fire that overrode her terror, she stepped smoothly and deliberately beside Roderick. Her flat shoes provided perfect traction on the marble floor.
With blinding speed, Elowen drove one forceful, devastating knee directly into Roderick’s upper abdomen, perfectly targeting his solar plexus.
The impact was sharp and utterly unexpected. Roderick let out a strained, breathless gasp. His eyes bulged as the wind was entirely knocked out of his lungs. He doubled over instantly, his grip on Magnus's collar failing completely. The electric hair clippers slipped from his hands, dropping onto the carpet with a dull thud, the buzzing sound mercifully dying as the battery dislodged.
Roderick stumbled backward, clutching his stomach, and collapsed heavily into an empty upholstered chair behind him.
The sudden violence perpetrated by a housemaid shattered the atmosphere of the room. The bodyguards, trained to react to threats, instantly released Magnus and stepped swiftly between Elowen and the gasping Roderick, their hands hovering near their concealed weapons.
The mocking laughter of the guests died instantly. The clinking of crystal and the soft hum of conversation evaporated. Dozens of powerful, dangerous adults froze, staring in utter disbelief at the beautiful woman in the black maid dress who had just crippled a senior syndicate boss.
Elowen did not press her attack. She immediately retreated, turning her back on the armed guards, and returned directly to Magnus’s side. Her hands were shaking violently as she grabbed a clean, folded linen napkin from the table. She gently and carefully covered the shaved patch on the side of his head, her fingers trembling against his skin as she checked his face for any other injuries.
Magnus looked at her, his observant eyes wide with a mixture of shock and profound respect.

"You’re shaking," Magnus said quietly, looking directly at her.
"I'm fine, sir," Elowen whispered, staying close beside him, her body acting as a fragile shield against the room.
