Chapter 3

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute, a heavy vacuum waiting to be filled by inevitable violence. The gentle golden highlights of the chandeliers seemed to spotlight the impossible tableau at the center of the room: the untouchable mafia boss, the gasping usurper, and the beautiful housemaid who had just rewritten the rules of engagement.
Magnus slowly stood up. Without the bodyguards restraining him, his towering frame dominated the space. He ignored the two massive men standing defensively in front of his uncle. He kept Elowen securely by his side, his large, tattooed hand resting lightly on the small of her back, offering a silent, undeniable claim of protection.
"Did you honestly believe, Roderick, that my people would simply stand by while you executed a pathetic coup in my own home?" Magnus asked, his deep voice carrying flawlessly across the silent banquet tables.
Roderick wheezed, struggling to draw a full breath as he sat slumped in the upholstered chair. "She... she assaulted a made man," he gasped, pointing a shaking finger at Elowen. "Kill her. Kill her right now!"
The two bodyguards hesitated. They looked at the housemaid, then up at the towering, terrifying presence of the true boss. The cold, observant eyes of Magnus Arden promised absolute, agonizing death to anyone who dared to lay a hand on the woman beside him.
"Do you men truly believe you can pull your weapons before my loyalists in this room pull theirs?" Magnus inquired softly, his gaze sweeping the room.
Several men in tailored suits at the surrounding tables had already unbuttoned their jackets, their hands resting on concealed holsters, waiting for Magnus's command. The balance of power, momentarily disrupted by Roderick's ambush, had irrevocably shifted back to the king.
Elowen took a deep, shuddering breath. The adrenaline was fading, leaving her feeling dizzy and terrified, but she knew the confrontation was not over. The accusation of theft still hung in the air, a poisonous lie that Roderick had used to justify his actions.
She reached her trembling hand into the deep pocket of her white apron and pulled out her smartphone. The screen was already glowing, open to the secure security feed she monitored for the household staff.
"Sir," Elowen whispered, her voice urgent and shaken as she held the phone up for Magnus to see. "You need to look at this."
Magnus looked down at the bright screen. The footage was crystal clear, capturing the jewelry-display case situated on the far side of the ballroom earlier in the evening. The video clearly showed Roderick Arden standing alone by the case. With practiced, subtle movements, the older man reached out, unlatched the glass, took the missing diamond charity pendant, and smoothly slipped it into the inner pocket of his formal suit jacket.
Elowen looked up, her expressive eyes locking onto Magnus. "Sir… he stole it himself."
The words were spoken quietly, but in the dead silent room, they echoed like a gunshot. The guests nearest to them gasped, their eyes darting toward the gasping uncle.
Magnus processed the footage instantly, the cold, calculating machinery of his mind snapping into lethal focus. The entire spectacle—the public accusation, the humiliating punishment—was a carefully orchestrated smokescreen designed to undermine his authority and cover Roderick's own petty theft from the charity auction.
Magnus slowly lifted his head. His cold, observant gaze shifted from the small screen of the phone directly toward Roderick’s chest. He looked specifically at the left side of his uncle's expensive formal jacket, right where the inner pocket lay.
Roderick, recovering his breath, realized immediately what was happening. The color completely drained from his face. Instinctively, involuntarily, his hand shot up and pulled that side of his jacket tightly closed, a desperate, damning gesture of guilt.

The surrounding guests stared. The truth was out, exposed by a maid with a smartphone and a devastatingly accurate knee strike.
"Are you going to empty your pockets, Uncle," Magnus asked, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper, "or shall I have my men cut the jacket from your body?"
