Chapter 6

A heavy, suffocating silence engulfed the ballroom once more. The jazz musicians had quietly packed their instruments and slipped out the back. The hotel staff stood frozen against the walls, unsure whether to intervene or call the authorities. The elite guests, usually so eager to gossip, were rendered mute by the sheer brutality of the domestic tragedy unfolding in their midst.

Victoria remained on the floor, her hands trembling as she tried to gather the scattered pearls from the broken necklace, a pathetic attempt to reclaim some semblance of her shattered dignity. Sophia, who had buried her face in Alexander's neck during the violence, slowly lifted her head. The loud noise had terrified her, but the warmth of her father's chest and the protective cage of his arms offered a security she hadn't felt in years.

She looked down at the woman on the floor. Her breathing hitched, her tiny chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow bursts. Alexander felt her trembling and immediately softened his stance, bringing his hand up to stroke her matted hair.

"It's okay, baby," he whispered, his voice cracking. "She can't hurt you anymore. I swear to you, she will never touch you again."

Sophia’s large, tear-filled eyes darted around the room, taking in the hundreds of staring strangers, before locking back onto her grandmother. Slowly, shakily, the little girl lifted her thin, dirt-caked arm from beneath Alexander's jacket. She extended a trembling index finger, pointing directly at the woman on the marble floor.

Victoria saw the gesture. The champagne glass she had demanded back from the waiter slipped from her shaking hand, shattering into a hundred glittering pieces beside her fallen pearls. Alexander followed his daughter’s pointed finger, his eyes narrowing to deadly slits.

"Tell me, Sophia," Alexander encouraged softly, though the room was quiet enough that everyone heard. "Tell me what happened."

Sophia swallowed hard, her small body shaking violently against him.

"Daddy…" she started, her voice reduced to a terrified, raspy whisper. "Grandma is the one who… Grandma is the one who locked me in the basement when the men in suits came."

Alexander froze. "What men in suits?"

"The men with the cameras and the clipboards," Sophia continued, her words tumbling out in a rush of panicked relief. "She said if I made a sound, the monsters would eat me. She told them I was away at a special school. But I was in the dark. I was in the dark for so many days, Daddy."

The crowd gasped in unison. Whispers erupted like wildfire. The implication was clear: Victoria had been hiding the abused child from state inspectors or private auditors while pocketing her son's exorbitant child support.
