Chapter 1

The crisp evening air of the city did little to cool the restless heat simmering beneath Alexander Sterling’s skin. At forty-two, he possessed the sharp, commanding presence of a man who owned every room he walked into, yet tonight, the stifling atmosphere of the grand hotel’s ballroom had driven him out the service exit. He wore his success like a second skin—a meticulously tailored formal suit, a stark white dress shirt, a silk tie, and polished shoes that echoed against the damp pavement of the alleyway. He needed air. He was about to turn back toward the suffocating warmth of the black-tie gala when a sudden, frantic rustling caught his attention. It came from the shadows, near a line of overflowing industrial dumpsters. Alexander froze, the heavy gold of his luxury wristwatch catching the dim, flickering light. A tiny, fragile silhouette was practically diving into the refuse, small hands desperately tearing through discarded debris.

Alexander moved closer, his brow furrowing. He reached out, his large hand gently but firmly grasping the small shoulder to pull the intruder out of the dangerous waste. The figure stumbled backward, collapsing onto the rough asphalt. Alexander dropped to his knees, entirely unconcerned about the grime ruining his expensive trousers. He stared at the child before him, his heart stuttering to a sudden, agonizing halt. She was clutching a piece of severely moldy bread in her trembling fingers, holding it to her chest as if it were a priceless diamond. She wore a faded, ragged party dress that offered no protection against the biting cold, and her feet were shoved into worn, heavily scuffed sneakers. Beside her sat a crinkled plastic bag, partially filled with discarded, half-eaten pastries.

Alexander’s gaze traveled up to her face. Beneath the layers of soot, dirt, and dried streaks of tears, the child's skin was naturally fair and rosy. But it was her eyes—wide, terrified, and heartbreakingly familiar—that shattered his reality.

"Daddy?" Sophia whispered.

Her voice cracked, a frail, broken sound pushed through a throat raw from crying and prolonged hunger. The single word hung in the freezing air, heavy with a desperate, disbelieving hope. Alexander’s breath hitched. He felt the blood drain entirely from his face, leaving him cold and numb.

"Sophia?" he choked out, the name tearing at his vocal cords. "Oh my god. Sophia." He reached for her, his hands trembling violently. "What... what is happening? Why are you out here in the dark?"

Sophia flinched, pulling the moldy bread tighter against her chest, her small frame curling inward defensively. "I’m sorry," she whimpered, her voice barely audible over the distant traffic. "I’m sorry, I was just so hungry. Please don't tell. Please."

Alexander’s mind raced, struggling to process the nightmare unfolding in front of him. This was his six-year-old daughter. The daughter he provided for, the daughter who was supposed to be living a life of absolute privilege under his mother’s care while he secured their empire overseas.

"Tell who, sweetheart?" Alexander asked, his voice breaking. "Who would I tell? It's me. It's Daddy."

"You went away," Sophia sobbed, finally letting the moldy bread slip from her fingers as she looked at him, her eyes searching his face for any sign of a trick. "They said you weren't coming back."
