Chapter 4

The silence stretched tight, a fragile glass wire ready to snap. The elite crowd watched with morbid fascination as the Sterling family’s immaculate reputation began to publicly fracture. Victoria Sterling, a woman who had never lost her composure in fifty years of high-society rule, swallowed hard. The panic was evident in the slight tremor of her pearl earrings, but she quickly buried it beneath a thick, impenetrable layer of vicious contempt. She handed her champagne glass to a petrified waiter without looking at him and began to advance across the marble floor.

Her heels clicked sharply, a rhythmic, authoritative sound that echoed in the quiet room. She forced a brittle, condescending smile onto her lips, playing to her audience.

"Alexander, darling," Victoria said, her voice projecting clearly across the ballroom. "What on earth is the meaning of this? You’ve ruined the tuxedo."

She reached out a manicured hand, adorned with a massive diamond ring, as if to brush a speck of dust from his lapel. She moved closer, leaning in, her eyes flashing with a sharp, controlling warning meant only for him.

"Give the street urchin to the staff," she hissed under her breath. "You are making a spectacle."

Sophia peeked out from Alexander's jacket. At the sight of Victoria's reaching hand, the little girl let out a piercing shriek of sheer terror. She violently recoiled, scrambling up Alexander’s chest and digging her small fingers into his shoulders, trying to make herself as small as possible.

"No! No, please!" Sophia cried out, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Alexander immediately turned his body, shielding his daughter from his mother's grasp. He stepped back, putting distance between them, and glared down at Victoria with a look of such absolute disgust it made the guests standing nearby instinctively take a step back.

"Keep your hands away from her," Alexander commanded, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that carried to the very back of the room.

Victoria’s brittle smile finally cracked, revealing the ugly sneer beneath. She straightened her posture, adopting her most imperious tone, loud enough for the entire gala to hear.

"Put her down, Alexander," Victoria demanded, her voice sharp and ringing with absolute authority. "That child does not belong here. Security will handle this..."

"Security?" Alexander interrupted, his voice rising, the dangerous calm finally beginning to fracture. "You want security to handle my daughter?"

May you like

Victoria’s eyes widened slightly in warning. "Alexander, you are confused. You are exhausted from your flight. Stop this nonsense immediately before you embarrass us all."

"The only one who should be embarrassed," Alexander said, his grip on Sophia tightening as he prepared for what he had to do, "is the monster standing in front of me."
