Chapter 7

The continuous medium wide shot captured the absolute, terrifying stillness of the Mafia boss. Nathaniel Crowe rested his large, tattooed hand reassuringly on Henry’s small shoulder, grounding the terrified boy. With a slow, calculated movement, Nathaniel shifted half a step backward and to the side, positioning his broad, powerful frame entirely between Serena and Celia. It was a definitive, physical barricade—he was placing his own body between the threat and the people he had chosen to protect.
His cold, perceptive eyes moved slowly toward Serena, loaded with unmistakable, devastating understanding.
Serena sat frozen in her ivory upholstered chair. The fair, rosy skin of her neck flushed a dark, angry red, contrasting sharply with the pale, panicked color of her face. The bright, luminous lighting of the room offered absolutely no shadows for her cruelty to hide within. She realized, with a sickening drop in her stomach, that the entire room had just heard her psychological abuse confirmed by the Boss's own son.
She attempted to sustain her polite, radiant smile, a desperate reflex to maintain her social poise.
"Nathaniel, darling, he is just a child. He misunderstands things," Serena stammered, her American accent airy but trembling uncontrollably.
But under the crushing weight of Nathaniel’s unwavering, lethal gaze, the corners of her smile tightened into a rigid, defensive curve. The facade cracked, and then it shattered completely. Her gaze dropped briefly to the white linen tablecloth, unable to withstand the sheer, suffocating menace radiating from the head of the table, before darting frantically back up to his.
"Do you expect me to believe my son's fear is a misunderstanding?" Nathaniel asked. His deep, low voice echoed cleanly off the carved walnut wall panels, the measured pause striking like the toll of a funeral bell.
"I was only trying to establish boundaries!" Serena cried, her voice pitching up as panic fully set in. She looked around the table at the dozens of powerful guests, but not a single capo or associate reached for a weapon to defend her. "He relies on her entirely too much! He needs to learn independence! I was going to be his mother!"
"Is independence taught through terror?" Nathaniel inquired, his posture completely still. "Is motherhood built upon the threat of abandonment?"
Serena’s lips parted. She drew a sharp, panicked breath, her diamond earrings shaking as she desperately searched for a justification.
"I am trying to prepare him for the real world!" Serena argued, her hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table. "In our world, weakness is a liability! You know that better than anyone! If he cries over a maid, how will he ever survive the syndicate?"

"Do you believe my son's capacity for love is a weakness?" Nathaniel asked, tilting his head a fraction of an inch. "Or is it simply a threat to a woman who possesses none?"
Serena’s defensive smile disappeared entirely. The sheer, psychopathic jealousy of her actions was now fully exposed. She looked at him with sudden, unadulterated fear. She was unable to answer without admitting exactly how she had abused his authority. Behind his broad shoulder, Celia remained standing perfectly still beside Henry, every single guest watching the execution in absolute, breathless silence.
