Chapter 4

The medium wide shot of the dining room captured the suffocating tension perfectly. The gentle golden warmth of the crystal chandeliers illuminated the tears rapidly gathering in Celia’s expressive eyes. Her softly heart-shaped face was pale, her delicate chin trembling almost imperceptibly as the paralyzing fear for her mother's future broke against the unyielding presence of the Mafia boss.

Nathaniel held Serena’s gaze for one final, devastating second before he moved.

He didn't rush. He didn't slam his fist on the table. Nathaniel rose from his ivory upholstered chair with a terrifying, deliberate grace. His broad, powerful shoulders shifted beneath the tailored dark three-piece suit. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he placed his palms flat on the table, pushing himself up to his full, imposing height.

He turned entirely toward Celia.

The movement was so definitive, so outside the expected protocol of an engagement dinner, that the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The clatter of silver cutlery against porcelain stopped entirely.

Nathaniel followed the trajectory of Serena’s earlier pointed glance, tracing the invisible line of threat right to the trembling housemaid. He looked directly into Celia’s eyes, his cold, perceptive gaze piercing through her professional exterior to the sheer terror hiding beneath.

“Celia. Why is he afraid?”

His voice was low, deep, and impossibly deliberate. The question dropped into the silent, luminous room like a heavy stone into still water.

Every single guest at the massive, crowded table stopped eating and speaking. Men in expensive formal wear and women in sparkling evening gowns turned their heads in unison, their fair, rosy faces locking onto the head of the table. The silence was absolute, heavy with the terrifying realization that the apex predator of their world had just halted his own engagement dinner to interrogate a servant.

Celia froze, her heart plummeting into her stomach. She looked up, her expressive brows drawing together in sheer panic. She was trapped. If she spoke the truth, Serena would destroy her mother's life. If she lied to Nathaniel Crowe, she might forfeit her own.

"Nathaniel, what on earth are you doing?" Serena hissed under her breath, her face flushing a deep, angry crimson. She half-rose from her seat, her sculpted satin gown rustling loudly in the dead silence. "You are making a spectacle of us in front of the entire syndicate over a glass of water!"

Nathaniel’s expression stayed completely composed. He did not turn to look at his fiancée. His eyes remained fixed entirely on Celia.

"Do you believe I require your permission to speak to my staff?" Nathaniel asked Serena, without breaking eye contact with the maid. "Or do you believe your embarrassment outweighs my son's fear?"

Serena swallowed hard, sinking back into her chair. The terror finally pierced her arrogant facade.

"Look at me, Celia," Nathaniel commanded softly, his voice dropping into a register that demanded nothing but the absolute truth. "Is there a reason he withdraws his hand when you attempt to serve him?"

Celia’s breath hitched. The bright, clear lighting illuminated the moisture gathering along her lower eyelids. She looked into the eyes of the ruthless Mafia boss and saw an unwavering, terrifying demand for honesty—and an implicit, undeniable promise of protection.
