Chapter 6

The medium wide shot framed the escalating confrontation with cinematic perfection. The warm golden light from the crystal chandeliers cast long, dramatic shadows behind the standing figure of Nathaniel Crowe. The atmosphere in the room was as tight as a drawn bowstring, every guest paralyzed by the terrifying shift in power dynamics.
Nathaniel remained standing, his tailored dark suit acting as an impenetrable wall between the trembling housemaid and the furious socialite. With a slow, deliberate motion, he reached across the white linen tablecloth. His heavily tattooed hand grasped the crystal water goblet that had started the entire cascade of events.
He slid the water glass smoothly across the polished mahogany surface, placing it directly within Henry’s comfortable reach.
"Is this what you wanted, Henry?" Nathaniel asked, his voice softening into a register of profound, paternal warmth.
Henry did not immediately reach for the glass. The eight-year-old boy, neatly dressed in his small dinner jacket, slowly lifted his head. His fair, rosy face was pale, his large eyes wide with a mixture of awe and profound anxiety. He looked past the crystal goblet, past the flickering ivory candles, and looked directly up into his father’s cold, perceptive eyes.
He had been taught that the Mafia world his father controlled was unforgiving, and he fully expected the terrifying wrath of the room to somehow fall upon his own small shoulders.
“She’ll fire Celia if I ask.”
Henry’s voice was quiet, earnest, and completely devoid of deception. It was the simple, devastating truth of a child explaining the rules of a nightmare he had been forced to live within.
The boy left the glass completely untouched. His small hands remained gripping the armrests of his wheelchair, waiting in agonizing suspense to learn whether speaking the truth had just made things infinitely worse for the woman he loved.
The revelation dropped into the room with catastrophic clarity. The guests stared in absolute shock. Serena hadn't just made a passing comment; she had actively, maliciously threatened an eight-year-old boy, using his love for his caregiver as an instrument of psychological torture.
Nathaniel’s expression did not harden. He did not reprimand his son.
"Do you believe anyone in this world possesses the authority to fire the woman who keeps you safe?" Nathaniel asked softly.
Henry hesitated, his lower lip trembling violently. Tears finally spilled over his lashes, cutting clean paths down his cheeks. He shook his head slowly, finding a sudden, desperate anchor in his father's words.
"Have I ever allowed anyone to threaten what is yours?" Nathaniel inquired, reaching out with his right hand.
He gently covered the small, trembling hand that Henry had reached out to grasp his dark wool sleeve. Nathaniel squeezed his son's hand reassuringly, a silent, absolute promise of unyielding protection.

Keeping his hand firmly over his son's, Nathaniel slowly, mechanically turned his head. The paternal warmth vanished entirely from his features. He fixed a cold, knowing, and absolutely lethal stare directly upon Vivienne.
The time for questions of inquiry had passed. The questions of execution were about to begin.
