Chapter 5

The close-up of Celia captured the devastating heartbreak of a woman trapped by her own desperate circumstances. Her fair, rosy complexion was pale with absolute terror. The bright, clear lighting illuminated the tears brimming in her eyes, threatening to spill over her long lashes and ruin her polished, elegant appearance.

The moment Nathaniel’s unyielding question hung in the air, Celia realized she had reached the edge of a cliff. She had broken the cardinal rule of her employment; she was now the center of attention in the dangerous political arena of the Crowe syndicate.

Celia held Nathaniel’s intense, perceptive gaze. She saw the terrifying, deeply masculine power radiating from him, but beneath the cold exterior, she recognized a fierce, uncompromising loyalty to his son.

Her inner brows drew upward slightly in an expression of helpless, profound vulnerability. Moisture gathered heavily along her lower eyelids. She thought of her mother, frail and confused in the residential care facility, completely dependent on the money Celia earned in this dangerous house.

But then she looked down at little Henry. The eight-year-old boy in the wheelchair was staring at his lap, his small shoulders hunched, carrying a burden of fear no child should ever have to bear. He had withdrawn his hand to protect her.

Celia took a ragged breath, her loyalty to the boy overriding her fear for herself.

“He doesn’t want me sent away.”

Her voice was incredibly fragile and breathless, breaking the ringing silence of the room like a shattering crystal glass. The words thinned and cracked completely on the word "away," a heartbreaking sound of absolute defeat.

She pressed her lips tightly together immediately afterward, forcing herself not to sob openly, desperately trying to steady herself under the blinding spotlight of the golden chandeliers.

A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the seated guests. The implication was immediate and damning. To threaten a child's beloved caregiver, to leverage a boy's emotional security as a tool for control, was an act of cruelty that disturbed even the hardened criminals sitting at the table.

Serena’s face drained entirely of color. She looked wildly around the table, seeing the judgmental stares of the syndicate members.

"She is lying!" Serena shrieked, her American accent pitching up into a shrill, defensive frequency. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the housemaid. "She is a manipulative liar! She is trying to turn you against me because she is jealous of my position in this house!"

Nathaniel did not blink. He did not turn to look at his fiancée.

"Would a woman whose hands are shaking with terror possess the composure to orchestrate a lie in front of fifty armed men?" Nathaniel asked.

His deep, low voice vibrated with a terrifying acoustic weight. He stepped closer to Celia, his broad shoulders physically shielding her from Serena’s vicious glare.

"Is it customary for liars to weep when they speak?" Nathaniel continued, his questions dismantling Serena’s pathetic defense with surgical, ruthless precision.

Serena opened her mouth, her chest heaving under the satin gown, desperately searching for a justification. But before she could formulate a lie that wouldn't immediately seal her fate, another small, trembling voice broke the heavy silence of the dining hall.
