Chapter 7

We found Pierce Dawson at a private country house owned through one of Marco’s old companies.
He looked older.
Not dead.
Claire stopped in the doorway.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then she whispered:
“Dad?”
Pierce closed his eyes.
Claire crossed the room and hit him.
Not hugged.
Hit.
Then she collapsed against him.
I looked away.
Some pain does not need witnesses.
When Claire finally stepped back, she asked the only question that mattered.
“Why?”
Pierce looked at me before answering.
That irritated me.
I stepped closer.
“Talk to your daughter.”
He did.
Eight years earlier, he discovered Marco was building an informal network around Valenti captains who resented my father’s attempts to modernize the organization.
Pierce threatened to expose it.
Marco gave him a choice.
Disappear.
Or let the conflict spill onto Claire.
Pierce chose disappearance.
Noble at first glance.
Cowardly after eight years of silence.
“You could have contacted me,” Claire said.
“I was told you were safer if I stayed dead.”
“You believed him for eight years?”
Pierce looked down.
No answer.
Then I asked:
“Why did Marco suddenly let Gavin know you were alive?”
Pierce’s expression changed.
“Because he needed Claire.”
Exactly.
Marco resurrected a dead father at the precise moment he needed the daughter to forge my name.
Claire turned toward me.
“I’m sorry.”
I held up one hand.
“Not yet.”
She flinched.
Good.
An apology should not become a door out of consequences.
I looked at Pierce.
“What was Marco trying to get from the Quiet Room?”
He stared.
“My brother’s final list.”
I frowned.
“What list?”
“Names of captains who secretly agreed Serena could dissolve the old senior council if Marco ever tried to restore it.”
My father again.
Planning around his brother.
Marco did not merely want my removal.
He wanted to identify the men my father believed would resist him.
The forged transfers gave him temporary access to the residence.
My disappearance would give him an excuse to open the Quiet Room.
Then he could find the list.
And dismantle opposition before presenting himself as caretaker.
I looked at Claire.
“Your signature forgery wasn’t meant to steal my penthouse.”
Her eyes filled.
“No.”
“It was meant to open the door to every man standing between Marco and control.”
Pierce lowered his head.
May you like
And for the first time, Claire understood she had not been chosen because Marco respected her.
She had been selected because her friendship with me made her useful.
