Chapter 14

Marco lost the room quietly.

That hurt him more than shouting.

One captain removed his family pin from the table and put it back on his jacket.

Another moved his chair away from Marco.

Dominic did not move at all.

He simply stopped looking at my uncle.

Power leaves in small gestures before anyone announces it.

Marco saw every one.

“You’re making a mistake,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Which one?”

“Keeping her.”

He pointed at Claire.

Interesting.

Last attempt.

Divide.

I turned toward her.

Claire’s face tightened.

Marco continued.

“She signed your name.”

“Yes.”

“She slept with your husband.”

“Yes.”

“She wanted your home.”

Claire whispered, “Stop.”

Marco smiled.

“She wanted your life.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“She wanted parts of it.”

I glanced at Claire.

“Enough to betray me.”

Her eyes filled.

Then I looked back at Marco.

“But you want me focused on her because if betrayal becomes jealousy, your structure disappears from the story.”

Silence.

That landed.

I continued.

“Claire made choices.”

She flinched.

“Gavin made choices.”

His jaw tightened from the other room.

“Pierce made choices.”

He lowered his head.

“And you built conditions where every weakness became useful to you.”

Marco’s face hardened.

“Leadership is using what exists.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“Leadership is knowing what you refuse to use.”

The room went still.

That was the difference between us.

Marco saw fear.

Use it.

Grief.

Use it.

Marriage resentment.

Use it.

Childhood trust.

Use it.

Everything was material.

I was done letting him call that intelligence.

“You lose every Valenti command channel,” I said.

His expression changed.

“You cannot remove me.”

“I already did.”

Several captains remained silent.

No one defended him.

That was the answer.

Gavin came in next.

He looked around the room and understood immediately.

The future Marco promised him no longer existed.

Claire looked at him.

For the first time, there was no longing in her face.

Only disgust.

Gavin turned to me.

“What happens now?”

May you like

I looked at the man I once planned to give a Rolex for our anniversary.

“Now you find out who you are without my home, my name, or Marco promising you pieces of both.”
