Chapter 17

Six months later, I hosted dinner in the penthouse.
Not a council meeting.
Not an anniversary.
Dinner.
Dominic came.
Several younger captains came.
Aaron brought his new wife, who wore the Rolex and had no idea why I smiled when I noticed it.
Good.
Let the object have a better story.
The bedroom door stayed closed because nobody needed to see what I had changed inside.
The hallway console was no longer glass.
Dominic got his wish.
Dark walnut.
Heavy enough that no baseball bat would make the same dramatic point.
Claire did not attend.
That was right.
We had exchanged four letters by then.
No promises.
No pretending twenty-two years could be restored by regret.
Maybe one day we would sit in the same room again.
Maybe not.
Choice had replaced assumption.
That mattered.
After dinner, I found one remaining copy of the forged penthouse transfer in my desk.
I had kept it intentionally.
For months I thought it represented betrayal.
Then I realized it represented something else.
Failure.
Theirs.
Claire could copy my signature.
Gavin could record my voice.
Marco could study my habits.
They could reproduce handwriting, sentences, access patterns, property lists.
What they could not reproduce was me.
The people who truly knew me heard the wrong rhythm.
Saw the wrong curve.
Questioned the wrong wording.
Trust had been weaponized against me.
Trust also exposed the weapon.
I tore the page once.
Then again.
No ceremony.
I dropped the pieces into the trash.
My bodyguard appeared at the doorway.
“Everything okay?”
I looked around the penthouse.
The same hallway where the Rolex fell.
The same floor where forged pages scattered.
The same home Gavin and Claire thought they could inherit by turning my identity into paperwork.
“Yes.”
I meant it.
Sleeping in my bed had been betrayal.
Forging my name had been conspiracy.
But the deepest mistake was simpler.
They thought knowing me for years meant they could become me long enough to take what was mine.
They were wrong.
A signature can be copied.
A voice can be edited.
A home can be targeted.
May you like
But identity is built in the details only the people who truly know you recognize.
And after everything they tried to steal, that was the one thing none of them ever came close to owning.
