Chapter 11

Claire asked to speak to me alone.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered twenty-two years deserved at least one complete truth, even if the friendship did not survive it.

We sat in the room where she once helped me choose wedding flowers.

That irony was unavoidable.

She stared at her hands.

“I hated you sometimes.”

There.

Finally.

I waited.

“You always had somewhere to go.”

She laughed softly.

“Even when your father was impossible, you had a name people opened doors for. When my father died, I had you.”

“Except he wasn’t dead.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“That almost made it worse.”

I frowned.

She explained.

When Marco revealed Pierce was alive, he told her Pierce had stayed hidden because my family considered him disloyal.

Then Marco offered a path to reunion.

Help remove me.

Take temporary control of the penthouse.

Use its private access to reach Pierce’s location after the transfer.

“And Gavin?”

Her eyes filled.

“That happened after.”

“Why?”

She looked ashamed.

“Because he kept telling me you didn’t see either of us.”

That landed.

Not because it excused anything.

Because manipulation works best when it starts with something partly true.

I had been distant.

Busy.

Consumed by Valenti leadership after my father’s death.

I assumed old friendships could survive neglect because history made them permanent.

That was mine.

The affair was theirs.

“I should have called you,” Claire said.

“Yes.”

“I should have told you about Marco.”

“Yes.”

“I should have walked away the moment Gavin touched me.”

“Yes.”

She started crying.

I did not comfort her.

Not yet.

Then she said something I did not expect.

“I copied your signature the first time when we were sixteen.”

I stared.

She almost smiled through tears.

“Your mother wouldn’t let you go on that school trip. You made me sign the permission slip.”

Memory hit.

I had forgotten.

Claire had not.

“That’s where you learned.”

“Yes.”

Twenty-two years of trust.

One stupid teenage secret.

Repurposed into conspiracy.

Marco understood people better than I wanted to admit.

He gathered old mistakes and gave them new uses.

I stood.

Claire looked up.

“Is there any version of us after this?”

I answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

That hurt her.

Good.

Truth should not rush because guilt wants relief.

At the door, I stopped.

“One thing.”

She looked up.

“You were my sister for twenty-two years.”

Her face crumpled.

May you like

“That’s exactly why this worked.”

Then I left.
