Chapter 15

I did not forgive Claire.

I also did not destroy her.

People around me found that confusing.

They expected one dramatic category.

Sister again.

Enemy forever.

Families like mine love certainty because certainty makes punishment easy.

I wanted accuracy.

Claire lost access to my homes.

My private meetings.

My accounts.

My bodyguards.

My life, for now.

She moved in with Pierce while they decided whether eight years of lies could still produce anything resembling a father-daughter relationship.

That was their problem.

Gavin left the penthouse with two suitcases.

Nothing that belonged to Valenti.

He stopped at the door.

“Is this really how twelve years ends?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“It ended when you turned our bedroom into an archive.”

That hurt him.

Good.

He glanced toward the unopened Rolex box still sitting on the repaired console.

“You bought that for me.”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do with it?”

I looked at the box.

“Not your concern anymore.”

He nodded.

Then he left.

No grand goodbye.

No begging.

The marriage did not deserve theater after what he had turned intimacy into.

Pierce lost all contact with active Valenti channels.

Not because he disappeared years ago.

Because when he reappeared, he still let Marco decide what truth his daughter deserved.

Marco moved out of every family residence and lost access to capos who once treated his age like authority.

He called me twice.

I did not answer.

Silence can be punishment when it is chosen instead of imposed.

Dominic remained.

One evening, he stood beside the rebuilt hallway console and looked at the repaired glass.

“You should replace it with wood.”

“Why?”

“You clearly have opinions about glass.”

I smiled.

“Maybe.”

Then he looked toward the bedroom.

“You staying here?”

“Yes.”

That surprised him.

“Why?”

I looked around the penthouse.

Because they wanted it.

Because they tried to turn my home into evidence of surrender.

Because leaving would let betrayal choose the geography of my life.

“It’s mine.”

Dominic nodded.

Simple.

Correct.

I changed the locks.

Changed the bedroom.

Changed the staff access.

May you like

Not because the penthouse was contaminated.

Because control should reflect truth after truth changes.
