Chapter 5

The silence in the room grew suffocating. Outside, the morning traffic of the city hummed distantly below, completely detached from the quiet execution taking place on the eighth floor of St. Jude’s Pavilion.

"I asked you a question, Doreen," Seraphina repeated, her American accent smooth, terrifyingly steady. "Julian was scheduled to land at JFK at six this morning. His phone has been routed through a dead relay in Chicago since midnight. Where is he?"

Doreen clutched her bruised cheek, her fingers shaking. "He... he was delayed. The European consortium had questions about the northern port blueprints—"

"Do not lie to me in front of my guards," Seraphina cut her off, her baritone dropping into a register that made the hair on Callie’s arms stand up. "My logistics teams monitor every flight leaving Heathrow. Julian’s private charter never took off. The flight plan was canceled by an administrative hold issued from your husband's office."

Callie burst into tears, dropping to her knees beside the overturned gift baskets. "It wasn't my idea! Julian would have never let us take the boy! Mom told Dad to lock Julian’s corporate passport in the London embassy office until Monday!"

"Callie, shut your mouth!" Doreen shrieked, lunging toward her daughter, but one of the Vale guards casually stepped into her path, his broad chest stopping her like a brick wall.

Seraphina closed her eyes for a single heartbeat, taking a slow, deep breath to manage the throbbing fire in her C-section stitches. When she opened them, her eyes were twin shards of grey ice.

"You stranded your own son in a foreign country," Seraphina said, looking at Doreen with pure disgust. "You trapped him across the Atlantic so you could steal his newborn son while his wife was bleeding out on a surgical recovery bed."

"We did what was necessary to save this family!" Doreen screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into raw, venomous panic. "The Hale Development Corporation is thirty million dollars in debt! We overleveraged the downtown stadium project! If we don't present a direct male heir to the family trust by the end of the fiscal quarter, the banks will call the primary loans and liquidate everything!"

"And what did Callie’s marriage have to do with that?" Seraphina asked coldly.

"Her husband’s family... the Sterling Group," Callie sobbed, wiping her mascara across her silk sleeve. "They promised to absorb twenty million of our debt if I produced an heir with direct lineage rights to the downtown land grants! But I couldn't get pregnant! We’ve spent three years trying! When Julian told us you were carrying twins, Mom said... Mom said God had provided the solution!"

"I am not your solution, Callie," Seraphina said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "And my son is not a bargaining chip for your husband’s debts."

At that moment, the private satellite phone resting inside Seraphina’s bedside cabinet began to buzz with a low, rhythmic vibration.

One of the Vale guards stepped forward, retrieved the encrypted device, and handed it to Seraphina with a respectful nod.

Seraphina looked at the caller ID. It was an encrypted line from London.

She tapped the screen and held the phone to her ear.

"Julian," she said softly.

"Sera? Sera, thank God!" Julian’s frantic, breathless voice crackled through the speaker, laced with static and the sound of jet engines idling in the background. "I’m at Northolt airfield. My father’s attorneys tried to seize my passport at the terminal, but my private security team broke through the gate. What is going on back home? Why is the hospital wing on lockdown?"

Seraphina looked across the room at Doreen, whose face had turned the color of wet paper.

"Your mother and your sister are in my recovery suite, Julian," Seraphina said calmly.

"Did they bring the gifts? Did Callie bring the blankets?" Julian asked, his voice filled with innocent, exhausted relief. "Sera, I’m boarding a private Gulfstream right now. I’ll be on the tarmac in five hours. Are the babies okay? Is Miles okay?"

Seraphina paused, her thumb gently stroking the edge of the baby’s bassinet.

"Miles and Ivy are safe, my love," Seraphina murmured into the phone. "And your family is waiting for you to come home."
