Chapter 2

Pain tore through Seraphina’s fresh surgical incision, a searing, white-hot line across her abdomen, but her body reacted on raw, lethal instinct.

Throwing the heavy blanket aside, Seraphina surged forward on the mattress. Her right arm shot out like an uncoiling cable, her pale, slender fingers locking around Callie’s wrist with bone-grinding pressure.

Callie shrieked in shock as Seraphina twisted her arm downward, violently wrenching the woman’s hands away from the sleeping baby. With her left hand, Seraphina reached across the headboard and slammed her palm down onto the large red emergency panic button embedded in the wall.

A sharp, electric alarm chimed through the hospital intercom, flashing a muted red indicator above the suite’s double doors.

"Touch my son again," Seraphina whispered, her voice low, furious, and vibrating with an ancient, terrifying darkness. "And I will snap your arm at the elbow."

"Get off me, you crazy bitch!" Callie screamed, stumbling backward onto her heels as Seraphina released her with a dismissive shove.

Doreen’s face flushed an apoplectic crimson. "How dare you lay hands on my daughter! You ungrateful stray!"

Before Doreen could take another step, the suite doors burst open.

Nolan Pierce, the fifty-two-year-old chief of hospital security, charged into the room, flanked by three armed guards in crisp navy uniforms. Nolan was broad-shouldered, seasoned, his jaw set in a hard, professional line as his hand hovered near his utility belt.

"Security! Nobody move!" Nolan barked, sweeping the room.

Doreen instantly stepped forward, clutching her pearls, her features contorting into a mask of dramatic, tearful horror.

"Officer! Thank God you’re here!" Doreen shouted, pointing an accusatory, shaking finger at Seraphina. "She’s completely unstable! Postpartum psychosis! She just violently assaulted my daughter and threatened to harm the children! Restrain her before she hurts those babies!"

Two of the younger security guards stepped cautiously past the rolling VIP cart, unclipping zip-restraints from their belts as they approached the bed.

"Ma'am, please keep your hands visible," the first guard ordered, taking a step toward Seraphina.

Seraphina didn't flinch. She sat upright on the edge of the mattress, her hospital gown pooling around her knees, one bare foot planted firmly on the cold floor despite the bleeding ache in her stitches. She slowly raised her right hand, placing her palm flat against the chrome side rail of Ivy’s bassinet.

The morning sunlight caught the heavy band resting on her middle finger.

It was not a cheap trinket. Crafted from brushed black platinum and carved with an intricate, razor-sharp serpent coiled around an obsidian crest, the Vale family signet ring absorbed the light with quiet, sovereign menace.

Nolan Pierce stopped dead in his tracks.

His eyes dropped from Seraphina’s pale face to the ring on her hand. The blood drained from Nolan’s weathered cheeks in an instant. His breath caught in his throat, a sharp, choked gasp escaping his lips.

Without a single second of hesitation, Nolan reached down, tore his peaked security cap from his head, and tucked it beneath his left arm. With his right hand, he violently waved the two advancing guards backward.

"Step back!" Nolan commanded, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated panic. "Clear the bedside right now! Back up to the wall!"

Doreen stared at Nolan, her mouth hanging open in complete, bewildered shock. "What are you doing, you idiot?! I am Doreen Hale! My husband sits on this hospital’s philanthropic committee! I told you to restrain her!"

Nolan didn't even look at Doreen. His eyes remained glued to the floor in front of Seraphina, his posture rigid with total deference.

Blinded by arrogance, Doreen lost the last shred of her patience. "Useless cowards!" she snarled.

Doreen lunged past Nolan, her manicured fingers clawing through the air directly toward Miles’s bassinet.

She never touched the acrylic glass.

Seraphina pivoted from the bed with terrifying, explosive speed. Her hand caught Doreen’s raised wrist mid-air, locking the older woman in place with an iron grip that forced a pained gasp from Doreen’s throat.

Then, Seraphina brought her right hand around in a vicious, thunderous arc.

The open-handed slap cracked through the private suite like a rifle shot.
