Chapter 3

The force of the strike spun Doreen completely around on her designer pumps.

Her head snapped sideways, her pearls flying apart as the sixty-three-year-old matriarch careened off-balance, crashing directly into the rolling VIP gift cart stationed near the windows.

The cart rocketed across the polished floor with a deafening metallic screech. It slammed hard into the heavy hospital cabinet, violently rebounding. The massive glass vase holding white phalaenopsis orchids toppled over, shattering into pieces across Doreen’s shoulders. Gift baskets filled with imported preserves and champagne burst open, showering the floor with ribbon, shredded wicker, and broken jars. Stacked pastel blankets unraveled beneath Doreen’s kicking heels, and a bouquet of metallic celebration balloons twisted violently around her legs as she dropped hard onto the scattered packages, gasping for breath, clutching her swelling, purple cheek.

Callie let out a choked shriek, backing up so fast her spine slammed into the wall cabinet. "Mom! Oh my God, Mom!"

Silence fell over the room, absolute and suffocating, broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the fetal monitors and Doreen’s ragged, wheezing gasps among the ruined gifts.

The heavy suite doors swung open once more.

Four towering men dressed in bespoke charcoal three-piece suits entered the room in single-file formation. They moved without a sound, their presence radiating the cold, organized menace of high-ranking syndicate soldiers. Each man wore an identical silver pin on his lapel—a serpent coiled around an obsidian dagger.

They did not look at Doreen on the floor. They did not look at the trembling hospital guards.

The lead enforcer, a man in his late thirties with a scarred jawline and cold blue eyes, stepped forward and bowed his head slightly toward the bed. "Boss. The perimeter is locked down. Every exit from this wing is under Vale control."

Seraphina ignored the agonizing burn across her lower abdomen. She stood up from the bed, her cotton hospital slippers whispering against the linoleum. With slow, deliberate movements, she reached out, gripped the handles of both bassinets, and pulled them back together until they rested securely against her mattress, shielding both newborns behind her frame.

She reached down with her left hand, picked up the sealed adoption folder from the rumpled blankets, and gripped both sides of the heavy cardboard.

With one slow, rhythmic pull of her arms, Seraphina tore the adoption contract completely in half.

The sound of ripping parchment echoed through the room like a dry branch snapping. She tossed the shredded halves onto the floor, where they fluttered down onto Doreen’s lap, resting amid the crushed orchid petals and broken glass.

Seraphina looked down at the woman who had tried to steal her son. Her face was dead calm, her grey eyes colder than a winter grave.

"You want to take my children?" Seraphina whispered, her voice low, measured, and lethal. "You have no idea whose blood they carry."

Doreen pushed herself up onto one shaking elbow, coughing through the dust of broken porcelain. Her painted lips were smeared with blood from her split lip, her hair a wild, ruined nest. She looked from the four armed men standing at attention to the dark platinum serpent gleaming on Seraphina’s finger.

The breath died in Doreen’s throat.

"The... the Vale Syndicate," Doreen stammered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, horrified squeak. "You're... you're not an orphan."
