Chapter 3

The connection between mother and daughter in that terrible, suffocating moment was absolute. Emma stood trembling in the hallway, her small, bare feet rooted to the floor, her fair, rosy skin pale with unadulterated terror. She watched her mother bleeding and broken on the kitchen tiles, surrounded by monsters wearing expensive clothes.

Sarah fought through the agonizing waves of pain radiating from her twisted leg. She knew she couldn't outrun David. She knew Margaret would never intervene. If she didn't act right now, they were both trapped.

Mustering every ounce of strength she had left, Sarah forced her breathing to steady. She kept her eyes entirely locked on Emma.

She didn't speak. She knew any verbal command would instantly draw David’s violent attention back to the little girl. Instead, Sarah slowly, painfully lifted her left hand from the floor. She kept it low, hiding the movement behind the bulk of the kitchen island so David and Margaret couldn't immediately see it.

Sarah silently raised four fingers.

It was a secret code they had practiced months ago, disguised as a game when David was away on business trips. If Mommy ever holds up four fingers, you run to the red button.

Emma’s wide, tear-filled eyes locked onto her mother's raised hand. Despite her young age, the four-year-old’s survival instincts flared. She instantly understood. The terrifying game was now real.

"Emma, I told you to go to your room," David growled, turning his head slightly toward the hallway, noticing the little girl hadn't moved. He took a heavy step toward her, his loosened tie swinging. "Do not make me tell you again."

Emma didn't hesitate. She completely ignored her father's terrifying command.

She spun around on her bare feet and sprinted down the hallway with desperate, adrenaline-fueled speed. She didn't run toward her bedroom. She ran directly toward the small alcove near the front door where the specialized emergency panic phone was mounted on the wall.

"Hey!" David yelled, his anger instantly shifting into frantic alarm. "Where are you going?!"

Emma reached the alcove, her small chest heaving with terrified sobs. She didn't reach for the receiver; she didn't know how to dial 911. She knew only one thing. She reached up with both hands and violently slammed the large, glowing red panic button installed specifically for extreme home invasions.

The button didn't call the police. It bypassed the local authorities entirely.

David spun toward the hallway, realizing exactly what the little girl was doing. "No! Emma, stop!"

Emma kept her small hands pressed hard against the button, tears streaming down her face as she looked back down the hall at her raging father.

"Grandpa, please!" Emma screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice breaking with a sobbing, terrified urgency. She was begging the machine, begging the man on the other end of the line. "You have to save mommy! Daddy is hurting her!"

The sheer panic in her tiny voice echoed through the sprawling, opulent house, a desperate plea for salvation thrown into the void.
