Chapter 1

The kitchen of the Bennett household was a masterpiece of modern, upper-class suburban design, flooded with bright, cinematic light that reflected off the polished marble surfaces. There was no yellow tint to the illumination, only a stark, unforgiving brightness that showcased the pristine white cabinetry and the massive central island. To anyone looking through the expensive bay windows, it was a picture-perfect American home. But inside, the reality was a suffocating nightmare.

Sarah Bennett stood near the island, her fair, rosy skin pale and tense. At thirty-two, she was an elegant woman, currently wearing a delicate satin blouse, comfortable pants, and socks. Her diamond wedding ring glinted under the recessed lighting—a symbol of a marriage that had rapidly dissolved into a terrifying prison.

Standing opposite her was her husband, David. At thirty-six, he wore the uniform of success: a crisp dress shirt, a loosened silk tie, perfectly tailored trousers, and a heavy, expensive watch. But the handsome facade was entirely ruined by the vicious, unhinged fury twisting his features.

"I told you not to speak to him!" David roared, the volume of his voice echoing off the tile floor. "I told you what would happen, Sarah!"

"David, please," Sarah begged, holding her hands up defensively, her eyes darting toward the hallway. "She's going to hear you."

She was referring to Emma, their four-year-old daughter. The little girl had padded silently out of her bedroom in her pajamas, standing barefoot in the hallway. Her fair, rosy cheeks were stained with tears as she watched the monster her father had become.

Sitting at the far end of the kitchen island, completely unfazed by the screaming, was Margaret Bennett. David's sixty-three-year-old mother wore an expensive top, tailored pants, and a string of heavy pearls. She held a crystal glass of red wine, taking slow, measured sips. She watched her son's explosive rage with an expression of cold, twisted satisfaction.

David didn't listen to Sarah’s pleas. He didn't care who was watching. Driven entirely by his violent need for control, David lunged forward.

Before Sarah could even attempt to step back, David violently shoved her backward with both hands.

"Ah!" Sarah cried out as her feet flew out from under her.

The force of the shove sent her flying backward into the heavy marble island. She collapsed heavily toward the floor, but as she fell, her right leg caught awkwardly against the base of a heavy barstool.

A sickening pop echoed in the kitchen.

Sarah hit the floor hard, her right leg twisting completely beneath her in an unnatural, agonizing angle. Searing, blinding pain exploded through her body, causing her to cry out in sheer agony.

From the hallway, Emma screamed, a high-pitched sound of absolute, unadulterated terror.

David didn't offer a hand to his wife. He stepped over her writhing form, his face twisted with pure, unfiltered rage. He leaned down, his voice dropping to a vicious, threatening whisper that cut through the little girl's screams.

"Tell everyone you slipped," David sneered, entirely devoid of mercy.
