Chapter 9
Marco found another pattern in the hidden deliveries.
During the first months of isolation, Ryan had hidden almost everything from James.
During the last two months, he had started keeping specific Bennett-family items together in a separate cabinet.
Family photographs.
The music box.
A silver baby cup engraved with the Bennett crest.
A small velvet pouch containing one of James’s old signet pins.
Emily frowned.
“Why keep those together?”
James knew before Ryan answered.
“They were useful.”
Ryan looked at him.
James picked up the silver cup.
“For what?”
No answer.
Marco did.
“Presentation.”
The word changed the room.
James remembered a conversation from three weeks earlier. Ryan had suggested hosting a private dinner after the baby’s birth so senior Bennett men could “welcome the next generation.”
At the time, James thought it was an awkward attempt to belong.
Now it looked different.
Emily turned toward her husband.
“You were planning something after the birth.”
Ryan said nothing.
Linda stepped in.
“Every family marks a new generation.”
“With stolen heirlooms?” Marco asked.
“They weren’t stolen.”
“You hid them.”
Linda’s face hardened.
Ryan finally spoke.
“The baby would be presented with Bennett symbols.”
James stared.
“By whom?”
Ryan did not answer.
Emily did.
“You.”
Silence.
Ryan looked at her.
“You wanted Dad’s capos to see you holding a Bennett baby surrounded by Bennett family pieces.”
“That’s not what it was.”
“What was it?”
Ryan’s voice tightened.
“A sign that the families were joined.”
James almost smiled.
“There is no Reynolds organization.”
Linda stiffened.
That was the insult beneath everything.
Her son had married into something larger than himself.
Instead of accepting that, they planned to transform marriage into a claim.
The hidden gifts were not merely being kept from Emily.

Some were being saved for later.
Ryan intended to take the things James had sent as love and reuse them as proof of his own place inside the Bennett future.
