Chapter 14

Ryan asked whether he was being expelled from the Bennett organization.

James answered without ceremony.

“You were never part of it in the way you imagined.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

“I worked Bennett business for six years.”

“You worked beside Bennett men.”

“I moved money, crews, routes—”

“You were trusted because Emily trusted you.”

That silenced him.

Linda stood nearby with two packed suitcases. The penthouse staff had already moved her belongings into the hallway.

“This is Ryan’s home,” she said.

James looked around.

“No.”

Her expression hardened.

“My family lives here.”

“My family paid for it.”

“There it is,” Linda snapped. “Money. Control.”

Emily answered before James could.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

She stood near the doorway with one hand supporting her belly.

“You used this house to convince me Dad was controlling because he provided it, while you controlled every person who entered.”

Linda opened her mouth.

Emily continued.

“You hid my mail. You hid my gifts. You helped Ryan tell people I was unstable. And then you covered my bruises with a blanket.”

Silence.

“That isn’t protection.”

Linda looked at Ryan.

He was already defeated enough not to rescue her.

Emily turned toward him next.

“You will see the baby when I decide it is safe.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“I’m the father.”

“Yes.”

That surprised him.

Emily did not deny it.

“But being the father does not give you the right to frighten the mother.”

James heard the sentence carefully.

Emily was not replacing one controlling man with another.

Not Ryan.

Not James.

She was drawing her own line.

Ryan looked toward James.

“You’re going to let her do this?”

James almost smiled.

There was the final misunderstanding.

He looked at his daughter.

“She isn’t asking permission.”

Ryan finally understood.

The family power he wanted so badly had never been the ability to command Emily.

It was the strength to stand behind her when she commanded her own life.
