Chapter 10

James called six senior Bennett capos to the penthouse that night.
Emily agreed on one condition.
“I speak for myself.”
James nodded.
No argument.
The capos entered through the same hallway where the grandfather clock still leaned crooked from Ryan’s fall. James had ordered no one to repair anything yet. The hidden room remained open as well.
He wanted the house to tell the truth before anyone spoke.
Marco explained only what he personally verified.
The intercepted deliveries.
The letters.
The false messages.
The stored heirlooms.
Then Emily stepped forward.
She wore a clean cardigan now, but the bruises around her arms were still visible.
Ryan looked away.
Emily did not.
“For months, my husband told my father I wanted distance. He told me my father was ashamed of me. When I asked for help, I was told I was destroying my marriage. When I stopped asking, things got worse.”
No one interrupted.
That mattered.
Then Ryan tried.
“This is a private marriage issue.”
One capo, Samuel Trent, looked at him.
“You asked me about East River.”
Ryan froze.
Another man spoke.
“You asked me whether James had named anyone after him.”
A third added:
“You told me fatherhood gave you a permanent stake in Bennett.”
Linda’s face changed.
Ryan had been busier than even she realized.
Emily looked at him.
“How many?”
Ryan said nothing.
James remained quiet.
He did not need to threaten.
The men around the room had already begun understanding that Ryan mistook conversations for commitments.
Samuel Trent shook his head.
“You told me James was isolating Emily from you.”
Emily almost laughed.
The lie was so complete it had turned itself backward.
Ryan finally raised his voice.
“I was trying to protect my family.”
Emily looked at the locked room full of hidden gifts.
Then at the bruises on her arms.
“No.”
May you like
Her voice stayed calm.
“You were trying to make sure my family could only reach me through you.”
