Chapter 17

The door came off the hinges the following week.

Emily insisted on watching.

Marco thought that was unnecessary.

James understood why it was not.

For months, that room had held every piece of evidence Ryan and Linda wanted her to believe did not exist—letters, photographs, baby gifts, family heirlooms, reminders that someone beyond the penthouse still remembered her.

Now there was no lock.

No brass key.

No reason for one.

The old stacks were gone. Emily opened each package herself. Some she kept. Some she gave away. Some made her cry. A few made her laugh at how terrible James was at choosing baby clothes.

The silver music box sat on a nursery shelf.

Her mother’s photograph stood beside it.

The pink teddy bear rested near the bassinet.

One afternoon, James arrived and found Emily sitting on the carpet with the baby asleep beside her. Ethan—no, there was no older child in the room. Only the newborn and a half-open box of old letters.

Emily held one up.

“You wrote seventeen of these.”

James nodded.

“You read them?”

“All of them.”

He waited.

“What did you think?”

She smiled faintly.

“That you repeat yourself.”

James almost laughed.

Then she unfolded one.

“‘You never have to earn your way back into this family.’”

His expression changed.

Emily looked around the open room.

“I wish I had read that when you sent it.”

“So do I.”

The baby stirred.

James started to rise.

Emily lifted one hand.

“I’ve got it.”

He sat back down.

She picked up her child herself.

Small change.

Huge meaning.

Months earlier, Ryan and Linda had controlled Emily by making every path outward disappear. James had nearly answered by controlling every path back.

Instead, the family learned something harder.

A door only means safety when the person inside is free to open it.

Emily looked toward the empty doorway where the lock used to be.

Then at her father.

“You can come tomorrow.”

James smiled.

“Invitation?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He left when she asked.

The door remained open behind him.
