Chapter 11

Linda turned on Ryan before midnight.

It happened almost casually.

One of the capos asked who first suggested hiding James’s deliveries, and Linda answered, “Ryan.”

Ryan stared at her.

“You told me she needed separation.”

“I said she needed boundaries.”

“You bought the lock.”

“You asked for one.”

Emily watched them dismantle each other one sentence at a time.

For months, they had operated like one mind. Now neither wanted to own the ugliest parts of the same plan.

Marco noticed it too.

“Who decided the baby presentation would happen without James?”

Ryan looked at Linda.

Linda laughed.

“Now you need your mother?”

His face hardened.

She continued.

“You were the one who said James would come crawling once Emily stopped answering him.”

The room went quiet.

Emily stared at her husband.

Ryan’s expression changed immediately.

Linda realized what she had revealed.

Too late.

James spoke for the first time in several minutes.

“Come crawling for what?”

Ryan said nothing.

Linda looked away.

James waited.

Finally Ryan answered.

“Access.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Not because she was surprised.

Because hearing it aloud made the entire marriage feel smaller.

Ryan continued, defensive now.

“You would eventually want your daughter back. You would want the baby. You would have to deal with me.”

James stared at him.

“And what did you want in return?”

“Respect.”

Marco almost laughed.

James did not.

“Meaning?”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“East River. A real seat at council. Recognition that I wasn’t just your daughter’s husband.”

There it was.

Everything reduced to one grievance.

Ryan had married a Bennett and resented being known as the man who married a Bennett.

So he isolated Emily until her father would have to purchase access to his own daughter with power.

Linda looked disgusted with him now.

May you like

Not because the plan was cruel.

Because he had admitted how little the cruelty was actually worth.
