Chapter 9

Adrian slowly turned away from the fireplace. His thick, slightly wavy hair caught the bright light of the study as he looked back at his sister. The charming, romantic strands falling over his forehead stood in stark contrast to the absolute, terrifying violence simmering just beneath his skin.

"Let them strike," Adrian said, his American accent flawless and deadly. "I want them to step out of the shadows. I want to see the faces of the men who conspired with you to murder my wife."

"You don't know how deep this goes," Claudia wept, sinking to her knees on the marble floor. Her heavy diamond jewelry clattered against the stone. "It wasn't just the hospital staff, Adrian. The Rossi family funded the doctors. They wanted you to take the throne because they believed they could control you through me. If you execute me, you trigger a war with the entire East Coast Commission."

The revelation hung heavily in the cinematic brightness of the study. Claudia had not just acted out of twisted family loyalty; she had sold out her own bloodline to their greatest rivals in exchange for secret power and influence.

Elena let out a soft gasp, pulling Ruby tightly against her chest, terrified by the sheer scale of the mafia politics unraveling before her.

"You sold us to the Rossis," Adrian whispered. The cold, intimidating aura surrounding him intensified until it felt like a physical weight pressing down on everyone in the room. "You murdered my wife. To put a leash on my neck."

"I did what I had to do!" Claudia shrieked, desperately trying to justify her treason. "You were weak, Adrian! You were going to throw away our empire for a civilian woman!"

"I am going to throw away the entire empire. Just to watch you burn," Adrian promised, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that promised absolute annihilation.

The heavy mahogany doors to the study swung open. Two heavily armed bodyguards stepped inside, followed closely by a pale, nervous man carrying a silver medical case. It was Dr. Evans, the syndicate’s private physician.

"Mr. Blackwood," Dr. Evans said respectfully, his eyes darting nervously toward Claudia kneeling on the floor, bound by the torn charity blanket. "I brought the kits as requested. We can perform the buccal swabs immediately."

"Do it," Adrian commanded, gesturing toward Ruby and Elena. "Be gentle with her."

The doctor walked over to the terrified mother and child. Elena held Ruby steady, whispering soothing words in her ear as the doctor gently swabbed the inside of the three-year-old’s rosy cheek. Ruby didn't cry; she simply watched the strange man with wide, innocent blue eyes.

"Now me," Adrian said, stepping forward and opening his mouth.

The doctor quickly completed the swab, sealing both samples in sterile plastic vials. "I will run the sequence in the private lab, sir. We will have a definitive match in less than four hours."

"Do not leave this house until the results are in my hand," Adrian ordered. "If you make a single phone call, you will not leave this house alive."

"Understood, sir," Dr. Evans nodded rapidly, fleeing the room with the medical case clutched tightly to his chest.
