Chapter 3

Claudia ignored her brother's warning, her fair skin flushed with arrogant defiance. She gripped the pink-and-white patchwork blanket tightly, her heavy diamond ring snagging violently on the delicate, faded pink stitches near the hem.

As she yanked her hand to free the jewelry, the thick diamond setting caught the fabric. A sharp, distinct ripping sound echoed through the quiet study. A small, hidden seam at the corner of the blanket tore wide open, the old threads finally giving way under the violent force.

"Look what you made me do," Claudia snapped, shaking her hand to dislodge the torn fabric.

As she shook the blanket, two small objects slipped from the newly opened cavity. They fell through the bright, cinematic air and landed on the polished marble floor with a soft, undeniable clatter.

Adrian’s cold, intimidating eyes immediately locked onto the objects. He stepped past his sister, his polished leather shoes making no sound, and knelt gracefully to the floor. His artistic, tattooed fingers reached out and carefully picked them up.

One object was a faded, old hospital photograph. The other was a tiny, clear plastic newborn identification bracelet.

The bright natural light from the expansive windows illuminated the photograph in Adrian's hand. It showed a beautiful woman with fair, rosy skin lying in a hospital bed, her face exhausted but glowing with profound love. In her arms, she was holding a tiny, fragile newborn wrapped tightly in the exact same pink-and-white patchwork blanket.

It was a photograph of Adrian's late wife.

Adrian stared at the image, his heart stopping completely in his chest. His breathing ceased. The few loose strands of wavy hair falling over his forehead shadowed the sudden, catastrophic realization burning in his eyes. His thumb brushed over the face of his dead wife, a woman he had mourned in silence for three agonizing years.

"Where did you get this?" Adrian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, barely suppressed rage.

Claudia turned around, her annoyance shifting instantly into absolute, unadulterated panic. She saw what was resting in the palm of her brother's tattooed hand. The color drained entirely from her aristocratic face, leaving her looking like a porcelain ghost under the bright lights of the study.

"Adrian, give that to me," Claudia demanded, her voice pitching up into a shrill, hysterical shriek.

She immediately lunged for the newborn identification bracelet, her manicured fingers clawing desperately through the air to snatch the tiny piece of plastic from his hand.

Adrian moved with blinding, explosive speed. He shifted his weight, pulling the objects safely out of her reach, his cold eyes rising to meet her terrified gaze.

"Why. Are you so afraid. Of this?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a low, lethal hum.

"It's trash! It's a mistake!" Claudia yelled, scrambling forward on the marble floor, her expensive business dress twisting around her legs. "Give it to me, Adrian! You shouldn't be looking at that!"

"You knew. What was inside," Adrian stated, the cold, measured cadence of his words slicing through her frantic lies like a razor blade.

"I know nothing!" Claudia shrieked, making one final, desperate grab for the hospital photograph.
