Chapter 9

Everett didn't wait for an answer. He grabbed Clara’s hand, his warm, tattooed fingers wrapping securely around her delicate wrist, and pulled her out of the study into the chaotic, flashing hallway.

The bright, luminous colors of the mansion were gone, replaced by the chaotic strobe of emergency lights and the deafening, rhythmic staccato of heavy gunfire echoing from the eastern wing. The smell of cordite and burning wood filled the air.

Everett moved with absolute, predatory grace. He kept Clara tucked safely behind his powerful shoulders, his weapon raised, his observant eyes sweeping every corner and gilded mirror for threats. They navigated the marble corridors, the sound of combat growing louder with every step.

As they reached the heavy oak doors separating the main house from the family wing, a massive explosion rocked the foundation of the estate.

The shockwave threw them both against the carved walnut paneling. Dust and debris rained down from the ceiling. The heavy oak doors were blown entirely off their hinges in a blinding flash of orange fire.

"Are you injured?" Everett shouted over the ringing in their ears, pulling Clara back to her feet.

"I'm okay!" Clara gasped, coughing through the thick smoke.

Through the ruined doorway, the bright tactical lights of three heavily armed mercenaries pierced the darkness. They were moving aggressively down the corridor, aiming their assault rifles directly at the door to Theo’s nursery.

"Did you forget whose house you entered?" Everett asked the empty air.

He stepped out from cover, pulling Clara tightly against his side. The roar of his customized weapon was deafening in the enclosed space. The first mercenary collapsed backward into the smoke, his chest armor shattered. The other two spun toward the sound of Everett's fire, but the mafia boss was already moving.

Two precise, measured shots echoed through the hall. The remaining two men crumpled to the thick patterned rug, their weapons clattering against the polished floor.

Everett did not pause. He pushed through the smoke, hauling Clara with him, and kicked open the door to the nursery.

The interior of the room was terrifyingly dark, the bedside lamp having shattered during the explosion. The air was thick with plaster dust.

"Theo!" Everett called out, his deep voice carrying a raw, desperate edge.

"Papa? I am here," a fragile, shaking voice answered from the far corner of the room.

Clara rushed forward, navigating the debris, and found the little boy huddled behind an overturned bookshelf. Theo’s fair, rosy skin was pale with terror, but he was unharmed.

"I have you, Theo. You are safe," Clara reassured him, gently lifting the boy and wrapping a protective arm around his shoulders.

Everett quickly scanned the room, his weapon sweeping the darkness. He walked over to the shattered window, looking down at the eastern gardens. The bright muzzle flashes of his security team were successfully pushing the remaining Vance mercenaries back toward the breached wall. The assault was breaking.

"Is the perimeter secure, Marcus?" Everett demanded into his radio earpiece.

"Hostiles are retreating, Boss!" Marcus yelled over the comms. "We have them pinned at the breach! The police are three minutes out. Rosalind's father overplayed his hand."

"Will you ensure none of them escape?" Everett asked coldly.

"We are mopping them up now, sir."

Everett turned away from the window, the adrenaline slowly ebbing from his veins, leaving behind a cold, absolute certainty. The Vance syndicate was finished. He walked back over to where Clara was comforting his son. Theo reached out, his trembling hands resting on his father’s powerful shoulders.

"You came for me," Theo wept softly.

"Would I ever allow them to take you from me?" Everett asked, gently kissing his son's forehead.

He looked at Clara. The former housemaid was covered in dust, her sophisticated black dress ruined, but she was looking up at him with a profound, awestruck adoration. She had just watched him walk through fire to protect his family.

"Are we safe now, Everett?" Clara asked, her voice shaking slightly with the aftermath of the adrenaline.

"Are we not standing together?" Everett asked softly, his cold, perceptive eyes softening as he looked at her.
