Chapter 1

The engagement dinner inside Everett Sinclair’s mansion was a symphony of extravagant wealth and breathtaking light. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceilings, spreading a warm, golden illumination that washed beautifully over the carved walnut paneling and towering marble columns. Gilded mirrors lined the walls, catching and multiplying the reflections of tall ivory candles. Their flames flickered steadily inside crystal hurricane holders, set perfectly between low, meticulous arrangements of cream roses. The room felt bright, airy, and undeniably luminous, wrapping the white damask tables in a soft, elegant warmth that left every face clearly illuminated.

Thirty guests occupied the upholstered velvet chairs. They were the undisputed elite of the city's underworld and high society, all white Americans with fair, rosy skin that glowed healthily in the candlelight. Their conversations flowed effortlessly, a chorus of crisp, refined American accents mingling with the clinking of fine porcelain and polished silver.

"The eastern territory has never looked more stable, Richard," a wealthy senator remarked, lifting his sparkling stemware to catch the light. "Everett’s leadership is precisely what our syndicates required to maintain the peace."

"Indeed it is, Senator," Richard agreed, his rosy cheeks lifting in a wide, satisfied smile. "And with Rosalind by his side, this engagement officially cements an unbreakable empire. Don't you think the ambiance tonight is absolutely flawless?"

"I have never seen the mansion look this inviting," the senator’s wife added, her American accent dripping with admiration. "It feels so wonderfully warm. Rosalind has truly outdone herself with the aesthetic."

At the head of the long dining table stood Everett Sinclair. He was a mafia boss whose reputation was as cold as his eyes, yet he was movie-star handsome, possessing a deeply masculine presence. His powerful shoulders filled out a tailored charcoal three-piece suit to perfection. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline that was shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back naturally, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his fair forehead. A small, refined neck tattoo peeked from his collar, and artistic tattoos with generous negative space graced his hands, complementing his heavy family signet ring.

Beside him stood his six-year-old son, Theo. The boy wore a handsome velvet dinner jacket and a crisp white shirt, his hair neatly combed, his fair skin matching his father's. Opposite them sat Rosalind Vance, Everett’s fiancée. Her champagne satin evening gown pooled around her, and diamond earrings sparkled against her rosy skin. She maintained an immaculate posture and a practiced, gracious smile as she observed her guests.

Approaching the table was Clara Whitmore, a housemaid who looked beautiful enough to be the star of a film. Her softly oval face, gently arched brows, and delicate cheekbones were framed by hair arranged in a loose braided bun. Her slender, graceful proportions were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, white collar, and cuffs completed her look.

Clara stepped forward, keeping her eyes respectfully lowered. She set Everett’s gold-rimmed dessert plate down before him. With trembling fingers, she then placed a plain, sealed envelope beside Rosalind’s plate.

"Ah, excellent timing," Rosalind murmured softly, her American accent smooth as silk.

Rosalind quietly drew the envelope toward herself. Clara’s fingers lingered briefly on the paper before finally releasing it. As she pulled her hand away, Clara’s slender shoulders settled in a posture of weary, profound resignation.

Everett, whose perceptive eyes missed absolutely nothing in his domain, noticed the heavy drop of the maid's shoulders. He looked down at the plain paper, then up at the beautiful woman in the black dress.

"Clara. Why return your wages?" Everett asked, his deep, low voice vibrating through the space with a small, deliberate pause after her name.
