Chapter 10

The morning sun poured through the undamaged western windows of the Sinclair estate, casting a clean, healing glow over the command center Everett had established in his study. The air still smelled faintly of smoke, but the chaos of the night had been entirely scrubbed away by his efficient, lethal staff. The bright, airy, luminous colors of the mansion had returned, banishing the red emergency strobes.

Everett stood behind his desk, wearing a fresh tailored dark suit. He looked over the encrypted reports his men had compiled. The Vance syndicate was in absolute ruins. The failed assault on the Sinclair compound had exposed Rosalind’s father’s illegal mercenary ties to the federal authorities. The police raids had begun at dawn, dismantling the Vance operations across the city.

"Is the Vance patriarch in custody?" Everett asked into the speakerphone.

"Federal agents picked him up at his private airstrip an hour ago, Boss," Marcus confirmed. "He was trying to flee the country. The syndicate is dead."

"And Rosalind?" Everett asked, his voice a low, vibrating rumble.

"She was arrested at her penthouse. Conspiracy to commit murder, among other charges. She won't see the outside of a cell for decades."

"Will you ensure our legal team provides the prosecutors with every piece of evidence we possess?" Everett asked.

"Consider it done, Mr. Sinclair."

Everett ended the call. He poured himself a cup of black coffee, the dark liquid catching the morning light. The war was over. The kingdom was secure. But the hollow, empty feeling that usually followed a victory was entirely absent. He looked at the heavy family signet ring on his hand, the artistic tattoos flexing as he gripped the porcelain cup.

The heavy oak doors of the study opened quietly.

Clara stepped into the room. She was no longer wearing the sophisticated black maid dress. Instead, she wore a beautiful, simple day dress in a soft, elegant shade of blue. Her hair was down, cascading in gentle waves over her slender shoulders. Her fair, rosy skin was flawless, completely untouched by the violence of the previous night. She looked breathtaking, a movie-star beauty standing in the luminous light of his sanctuary.

"Good morning, Everett," Clara said softly, stepping into the room with a newfound, quiet confidence.

"Is my son resting comfortably?" Everett asked, setting his coffee cup down.

"He is asleep in the new suite," Clara smiled. "He asked me to tell you that he expects you for dinner tonight, and he will not accept any excuses about your business."

"Do I look like a man who disobeys his son?" Everett asked, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.

Clara laughed, a melodic, beautiful sound that filled the heavy, carved walnut room. She walked over to the desk, her expressive brows drawing together slightly as she looked at the reports scattered across the wood.

"Is it truly over?" Clara asked.

"Does a king worry about the pawns once the game is won?" Everett asked, stepping around the desk to close the physical distance between them.

He stopped just inches away from her, his towering, masculine frame casting a protective shadow over her slender figure. He looked down into her softly oval face, his cold, perceptive eyes completely focused on her.

"Are you prepared for the reality of your new position, Clara?" Everett asked quietly. "The world outside these walls is dangerous. My enemies are dead today, but there will always be others."

"Are you asking if I am afraid to stand beside you?" Clara asked, answering his question with one of her own, a spark of defiant courage in her eyes.

"I am asking if you understand that once you step fully into my life, there is no stepping back," Everett stated, his deep voice a low, mesmerizing whisper.

Clara held his gaze, her heart fluttering against her ribs. She looked at his extremely short stubble, the refined tattoos on his hands, and the unmistakable, intoxicating danger he represented. She had seen the monster he could be to his enemies, but she had also seen the man who would walk through fire for his family.

"Do you believe I would ever want to step back, Everett?" Clara asked softly.

Everett’s breath hitched almost imperceptibly. He reached out, his tattooed hands gently cupping her delicate cheekbones. The touch was electric, a surge of raw, powerful emotion that shattered the final barriers around his heart.

"Shall we find out?" Everett asked.

He leaned down, and Clara rose to meet him. Their lips met in a profound, searing kiss, a promise sealed in the bright, luminous warmth of the estate. The war was won, the ghosts of the past were banished, and the Sinclair empire had finally found its true queen.
