Chapter 8

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. The imposing, masculine frame of the mafia boss filled her vision as he stepped closer. The warm golden light of the study caught the extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble on his jawline.
"What kind of change, Mr. Sinclair?" Clara asked, her heart fluttering rapidly against her ribs.
"Would you prefer to assume the role of Theo’s personal governess, answering to no one in this house but me?" Everett asked.
Clara stared at him, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the offer. A governess was a position of high respect and immense trust, offering a salary and security that far exceeded her role as a housemaid. It meant she would no longer be invisible; she would be a central figure in the life of the mafia boss's only son.
"Are you serious, sir?" Clara asked, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her fair, rosy face.
"Have I ever joked about the welfare of my child?" Everett asked, stopping just inches from her.
Clara looked up into his handsome face. The sheer intensity of his gaze made her knees weak. There was a magnetic, undeniable pull between them, a spark ignited in the fires of the evening's chaos.
"I would be honored," Clara whispered.
Before Everett could ask his next question, the heavy silence of the mansion was abruptly shattered.
A blaring, high-pitched security siren erupted through the halls, the sound vibrating violently through the carved walnut paneling. The warm golden light in the study flickered, immediately replaced by stark, pulsating red emergency strobe lights.
Clara gasped, instinctively taking a step back as the alarms wailed.
Everett’s demeanor changed in a microsecond. The gentle employer vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, lethal mafia king. His powerful shoulders squared, and his perceptive eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
He strode quickly to his massive mahogany desk and pressed a button on the intercom system.
"What is the situation at the perimeter?" Everett demanded into the microphone, his deep voice slicing cleanly through the chaotic wail of the sirens.
"Boss!" the frantic voice of his head of security crackled back over the speaker. "It's a coordinated breach! The Vance syndicate sent a heavy assault team! They rammed the eastern service gates with an armored truck. We have multiple hostiles in the gardens, moving toward the main house!"
Rosalind’s father had not waited. The broken engagement had ignited the powder keg, and the enemy was already at the door.
"Are the interior blast doors engaged?" Everett asked, remaining terrifyingly calm despite the adrenaline surging through his veins.
"Engaging now, sir! But they have heavy explosives. We are returning fire, but they are pushing hard toward the family wing!"
"Will you hold the main hall until I arrive?" Everett asked.
"We will hold the line, Mr. Sinclair!"
Everett released the intercom button. He reached under his desk, his tattooed hands moving with practiced, lethal precision, and pulled out a heavy, customized automatic weapon. He racked the slide, the metallic clack echoing sharply in the red-lit room.
He turned and looked at Clara. She was backed against the wall, her expressive eyes wide with fear, yet entirely resolute. She was not running.
"Are you prepared to lock this door behind me?" Everett asked, walking toward her.
"I have to get to Theo!" Clara cried out, panic finally lacing her American accent. "They are going toward the family wing!"
"Will you survive running through a crossfire in the main hallway?" Everett asked bluntly, his imposing frame blocking the exit.
"I can't just leave him alone in the dark, Everett!" Clara pleaded, using his first name in her desperation. "He will be terrified!"
Everett stared at the beautiful woman before him. She possessed a profound, quiet courage that completely eclipsed the shallow, venomous nature of the elites he normally dealt with. She was willing to run into a gunfight for a child who was not her blood.
"Are you willing to follow my exact orders if I take you with me?" Everett asked, his cold eyes burning with a fierce, protective fire.
May you like
"Yes," Clara promised without hesitation.
"Shall we go get my son?" Everett asked.
