Chapter 9

The sun began to dip below the horizon, replacing the bright, clean daylight with the vivid, intense colors of a city dusk. Neon blues and deep reds painted the sky over the harbor.
At the Vance southern shipping terminals, the transition of power was swift and completely silent. Without their primary guards, the remaining dockworkers and lower-level enforcers stood no chance against the highly trained, heavily armed Sterling operatives. Within an hour, the Sterling orchid emblem was painted over the Vance family crests on the shipping containers. Millions of dollars in illegal cargo and legitimate freight were seized without a single shot being fired.
Back at the Vance estate, Richard paced the length of his fortified study. His tie was discarded, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He had thirty men patrolling the lawns, floodlights cutting through the darkness, waiting for an assault that wasn't coming.
His phone buzzed. It was his port manager.
"What is it?!" Richard barked into the receiver. "Are they hitting the gates?"
"Boss..." the manager's voice was trembling, barely a whisper. "They aren't at the gates. They're at the docks. All of them. The south terminal, the east warehouses... they've taken everything. The Sterling men just walked in and locked us out. The police are ignoring our calls."
Richard felt the floor drop out from beneath him. "What do you mean they took everything? Take it back! Send the men!"
"We can't, Boss," the manager cried. "You pulled the men to guard your house! We are completely exposed!"
Richard dropped the phone. It clattered against the hardwood floor. He stumbled backward, collapsing into his leather desk chair.
In a single evening, without firing a gun, Maya had entirely dismantled his syndicate's primary source of wealth. She had financially crippled him while he was busy hiding behind his guards.
The heavy oak doors of the study burst open. Olivia walked in, her face pale, holding her own ringing cell phone.
"Richard," she gasped, her voice shaking. "It's the bank. The Sterling syndicate has called in the loans on our commercial properties. They bought our debt from the holding companies. If we don't pay forty million dollars by tomorrow morning, they are seizing this estate."
Richard stared at his mother, his vision swimming. The arrogance that had fueled him for years was entirely gone, replaced by a suffocating, crushing despair. He had pushed his wife's face into a cake to make himself feel powerful. In return, she had systematically dismantled his entire life in less than six hours.
"We have to surrender," Olivia whispered, tears ruining her makeup. "Richard, we have to call Julian. We have to beg for mercy."
May you like
"She won't show mercy," Richard said, his voice hollow. "You saw her eyes. She isn't a servant anymore."
He stood up, walking toward the large window overlooking his heavily guarded, yet entirely useless, front lawn. He was trapped. He was bankrupt. And he knew, with terrifying certainty, that Maya was not finished with him yet.
