Chapter 5

The sunlight streaming through the glass felt suddenly interrogative, exposing every flaw and drop of sweat on Richard’s face. He stood in the center of the ruined birthday party, stripped of his authority, watching as his wife—the woman he had broken and belittled for years—was transformed into an untouchable goddess right before his eyes.
"You can't just walk out!" Olivia shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattered. She pointed a trembling finger wrapped in diamonds at Maya. "That child belongs to my son! She carries Vance blood! You will not take my granddaughter!"
Maya turned her head slowly, looking at her mother-in-law with an expression of profound pity.
"Lily carries my blood, Olivia," Maya said smoothly, wiping the last bit of frosting from the child's cheek. "And considering how you just stood by and smiled while her father assaulted her mother, you have forfeited any right to call her family."
Julian pocketed his phone and gently placed a protective hand on Maya’s shoulder. "My cars will be here in two minutes. Let us go upstairs and collect your things, Alessia. We will not leave a single belonging in this house."
"I don't need anything from this house," Maya replied, her voice firm. "Everything I care about is currently in my arms."
"Maya, please!" Richard begged, his voice cracking. He took a desperate step forward, his arrogance entirely replaced by the terrifying realization of what he was losing. "I was angry! The business is under pressure! I lost my temper! I love you! I love Lily!"
"You love control, Richard," Maya stated, her gaze unwavering. "You loved that you could break me and I had nowhere to run. But you made one mistake."
Richard stared at her, swallowing hard. "What mistake?"
"You didn't kill me when you had the chance," she whispered.
The heavy mahogany doors of the solarium suddenly burst open. Six towering men dressed in dark, tailored suits and earpieces strode into the bright room. They moved with military precision, completely ignoring the stunned guests, and formed a protective half-circle around Julian, Maya, and Lily.
"Sir," the lead security officer said, his American accent crisp and professional. "The perimeter is secured. The vehicles are idling at the front steps."
"Good," Julian nodded. He looked at Richard one last time. "If you or any of your men attempt to follow us, Richard, I will consider it an act of war. And I promise you, it is a war the Vance family will not survive."
Maya turned her back on her husband. Holding Lily tightly against her chest, she walked out of the bright, airy solarium, flanked by a wall of armed men. She didn't look back at the ruined cake, the shattered frosting, or the terrified faces of the people who had mocked her.
As they moved through the grand hallways of the estate, Lily rested her small head on Maya's shoulder.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, her blue eyes wide. "Are we going to a new house?"
"Yes, my sweet girl," Maya smiled, a genuine, radiant warmth finally touching her features. "We are going home. To a place where no one will ever hurt us again."
