Chapter 2

The bright, airy solarium remained perfectly illuminated by the midday sun, but a heavy, suffocating silence had fallen over the crowd. The vivid pinks and whites of the ruined cake smeared the marble floor, a stark contrast to the sheer cruelty that had just transpired.
Maya rose slowly. Her elegant ivory dress was dotted with sugar, and thick clusters of bright pink frosting coated her cheeks, her chin, and her beautiful dark hair. She did not cry. She did not raise her hand to strike her husband. Her fair, rosy skin was pale, but her posture remained perfectly, impossibly regal.
Beside the table, little Lily burst into fresh, hysterical tears, her small hands covering her face.
Maya ignored the stares of the wealthy guests. She ignored Vanessa’s glowing smartphone screen. She immediately dropped to her knees, gathering her weeping daughter into her arms. With her thumb, she gently and methodically wiped a stray smudge of pink frosting from Lily’s rosy cheek, holding the child tightly against her chest to shield her from the staring room.
From the edge of the gathering, Olivia Vance stepped forward. At sixty-two, Richard’s mother was draped in an elegant navy silk dress, heavy diamonds glittering at her throat and wrists. She folded her arms across her chest, looking directly down at Maya with a deeply satisfied, chilling smile.
"Oh, please, let her clean it up," Olivia remarked to the crowd, smirking with vicious superiority. Her American accent was crisp and dripping with contempt. "Someone finally put you in your place. We were getting entirely too tired of your little aristocratic airs."
While comforting her daughter, Maya reached up. Her trembling fingers brushed against her collarbone, catching the delicate silver chain. She pulled it slightly, revealing the heavy, antique silver ring engraved with a sprawling orchid.
The moment her fingers touched the metal, the fear that had dictated her life for four years completely vanished. She looked up at her husband, her eyes turning into twin shards of icy resolve.
"We’re leaving tonight," Maya said. Her voice was low, devoid of tears, and laced with a devastating, absolute resolve that sent an unexpected chill down Richard's spine.
Richard stared at her, genuinely taken aback for a fraction of a second before his arrogance rushed back in to fill the void. He threw his head back and laughed—a cruel, booming sound loaded with arrogant mockery.
"Leave?" Richard chuckled, stepping closer to loom over her. "Where will you go? You have no money. You have no family. You're just a servant in this house."
From the periphery of the crowd, fifty-eight-year-old Julian Sterling pushed his way to the front. Impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, his fair face was suddenly drained of all color. He stepped closer, his eyes locked entirely on the antique orchid ring resting against Maya’s chest.

Maya turned her head toward him. Richard’s cruel laughter abruptly faded as Julian looked back and forth between Maya’s icy eyes and the heavy silver ring.
"My God," Julian whispered, stunned. His voice trembled with a sudden, overwhelming recognition. "Where did you get that ring?"
