Chapter 1

The grand solarium of the Vance estate was bathed in brilliant, luminous sunlight, pouring through floor-to-ceiling glass panes that offered a sweeping view of the manicured, emerald-green lawns. The room was a portrait of vivid, high-contrast perfection, adorned with crisp white linens, towering arrangements of pastel pink roses, and glittering crystal chandeliers that caught the midday light. Laughter and polite conversation floated through the airy space as wealthy guests, all possessing the fair, rosy complexions of the city’s elite, milled about in tailored suits and flowing afternoon gowns. It was Lily’s fourth birthday, and the bright, cinematic atmosphere was supposed to be a celebration of pure innocence.
But beneath the polished veneer, the air was suffocating.
Maya Vance stood beside the towering, four-tiered pink birthday cake. At twenty-six, she was exquisitely beautiful, possessing the mysterious, untouchable air of a young lady of high breeding. She wore an elegant, sleeveless ivory dress that perfectly complemented her fair, rosy skin. Around her neck rested a delicate silver chain, holding an antique, intricately engraved orchid ring that lay hidden beneath her collarbone. She held little Lily’s hand, offering her daughter a reassuring, gentle smile.
"Daddy said I get the first piece," Lily beamed, her bright blue eyes looking up at Maya.
"You do, sweetie," Maya replied softly, her American accent melodic and refined. "It’s your special day."
Before Maya could reach for the silver cake knife, heavy, polished leather shoes clicked aggressively across the marble floor. Richard Vance, thirty-five and immaculate in his tailored charcoal suit, stormed toward them. His face, usually handsome in a cold, patrician way, was twisted with sudden, inexplicable rage.
"Richard, what is it?" Maya asked, her voice calm but laced with an underlying tension she had learned to mask over the years.
Richard didn’t answer. He lunged forward, his large hand snapping out to grab a fistful of Maya’s dark, immaculately styled hair.
"Richard! Stop!" Maya gasped, her hands flying up to his wrist.
Without a word of warning, Richard forcefully yanked her head down, slamming her face directly into the top tier of Lily’s birthday cake. The impact shattered the delicate pastry. Layers of rich vanilla sponge and vibrant pink frosting exploded outward, splattering across the pristine white table linens and scattering onto the polished floor.
Lily let out a piercing, terrified scream, stumbling backward as she watched her mother’s head being held down in the ruined dessert. The cheerful hum of the party vanished instantly. The surrounding guests recoiled in collective shock, their champagne flutes trembling in their hands.
A few feet away, twenty-seven-year-old Vanessa Cole, wearing a fitted crimson gown that showcased her own fair skin, didn't step back. Instead, a malicious grin spread across her glossy lips as she raised her smartphone, the camera lens capturing every humiliating second of the assault.

Richard finally released his grip, stepping back to admire his handiwork. He adjusted the cuffs of his expensive suit, his chest heaving with adrenaline.
"Savor it," Richard spat, his voice exploding with humiliating, venomous contempt that echoed off the glass walls. "This must be quite a luxury for someone like you, isn't it?"
